I have just started to get some real bad squeals coming from my back axel when I reverse. Started about 2 months ago very very lightly...but in the last 3-4 days, it has got so bad I am afraid to reverse. It sounds like an un-greased hinge but 50 times louder to the point I can feel the vibration through the car. I have it booked in to the garage next thursday (small town....earliest they could get it in). Any ideas what may be causing it?

I had the brakes replaced and rotors machined at the end of January...my brakes squeaked very loudly. What do people know of the brakepad brand Ferodo? They were dead silent and really tight for about 2 weeks after installing....it was great, but know they've softened up and sqeaking again...no way near as bad though.

could be the calipers arent sliding freely or could even be a wheel bearing binding up as you go backwards. The mechanic should be able to fix either fairly cheaply.:D

If its a wheel bearing i wouldnt advise you driving the car. If that sucker locks up on you there is a high chance you will end up sideways without expecting it. Also check the calipers as stated above.

That puts a knot in your stomach. Cant get it in til next Thursday, and its my only mode of transport. Bugger.

Could it be that serious from a sqeak....there is no grinding or anything.

Jack the back up and see if the wheel has any side to side or top to bottom movement. Then give em a spin in both directions to see if it makes any nasty noises. If the wheel doesnt move and it doesnt make any nasty noises it should be ok but be careful and get it checked ASAP.:D

I have a squeeking noise as well... not bad enough to vibrate the car, but i'm just sure the handbrake pads are rubbing on the disc in reverse

It only vibrates occasionally....but I noticed something today. If I drive round the block a couple of times and then reverse....its silent.

When it first started, it was actually when going forwards and lasted about 100 metres.

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like you're handbrake needs checking / cleaning / adjusting.

Soz....didnt mention it was a TF.

I'd much rather it be the handbrake than the bearing.....less life threatening. Gotta be careful though.

Thanks again.

I had some very nasty squels coming from the back end of my TH. Started slowly, just after taking off the handbrake, but got worse and was doing it any time. Got it checked out, and it was the handbrake. The springs that keep the handbrake pads off the disc were stuffed, plus it was full of crap...

Best to get it checked out.

I know with the KC/KE Ford laser models they had a similar problem where brake dust would accumulate whilst driving, as soon as you reversed and braked, you'd get an awefull squeek/shudder/OMGWTF noise. Was just the last chunk grabbing and letting you know you hadn't reversed in a while :)

Maybe the 3rd gen magna do the same.

On that note, my '00 TJ wagon has never made a noise yet.

Cheers,

Steve

Sounds like it could be a handbrake issue as people have said. Go backwards and try to make the noise and if you can get it to do it gently pull on the handbrake ( at car park speeds of course) and see if it goes away. Eeasy check to do

Took my car in to be fixed today.

First off.....The squeal from the rear wheel actually dissappeared yesterday (after 2 months, it dissapears the day before I go in to get it checked), so there was nothing the mechanics could diagnose, but this is what they told me caused it:

The noise is because they now have to use metallic pads rather than asbestos. Because the calipers dont pull themselves off the disc, they rely on the movement of the wheel to pull them away. They said when you reverse, the rear end of the calipers move closer towards the disc and rub instead of staying parallel. So when I go forward, the noise gradually dissapears because the pads pull away from the disc. Could this be BS or legit?

I also asked them to check out the groaning noise from my engine (check out this article (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18676)). It had them stumped. I gave them a printout of that article and they tried the suggested remedies like removing the idler pully(?) and tightening the belts which had no effect. They're booking me in next week to investigate it further and didnt charge me for todays work.

They're nice people so Im not cheesed off but would have loved to get rid of the engine noise.

I tend to agree with the handbrake causing the squeeking noise. Mine does the same (not everytime) but on regular occassions. I notice it does it after I start reversing from a park. I replicated the squeek by driving very slowly (just rolling) in forward and reverse and with the handbrake button pushed in, slowly lifting the brake handle. You will hear the squeek start as the metal pads make contact. The other point to note was it only started doing it after the handbrake was adjusted at service. It's not enough to bother me at present so haven't been back to Mitsubishi yet. Will probably just mention it at next service.
