ok, so recently i have been thinking about getting a straight through muffler for my TF.

BUT, i dont realy want it too loud all the time, eg long freeway drives/ short everday trips.
so, i have a theory, based on a mates previous experience with a truck exhaust.

what if i rigged up a y split in the exhaust, where one end went to the stock muffler, and the other one went to a straight through muffler, or even just ended without a muffler at all. then a cable system would control a flap (with some sort of seal) which regulates which way the gasses flow.

i figure that this will allow me to have loud and unrestriced sometimes, and quiet other times, yes?
so, before undertaking anything this adventurous, i though that i had best see what you guys thought of the idea, and the likelyness that it will work.

Feedback will be much appreciated. (and sorry for the moderately long post.)

would i need two, one for each arm of the y joint?
or are you thinking about a different setup?

oh yea sorry i meant put a highflow muffler on.. with a butterfly valve, then you can have it pretty closed of for jsut general driving.. bit more opened for giving it a bit and completely open for giving it some...

this means if you want you can have a much louder system than legal when its fully open... and close it off for jsut driving around and itll be a nice loudness (haha didnt know what word to use:P)

i think u will need 2. but dude to be honest not all exhaust are loud. jus depands on wat setup u have.

i have a 2.5" redback and thats not loud at all and i do alot of freeway driving and peak our traffic driving early in the morning and its not givin me ne head aces. the sound is there only when u give it. i set my cruz to 100-110 and i wouldnt say its quite like a stock car, its jus a wee lil louder but not loud loud like sum cars and also when i cruz at 60 or 80 no sound there. so it really depands on wat system u go for.

I have a 1998 TF 30lt auto
What you forget is to benifit from your exhaust you need to tune the car to the exhaust so when you swap via a butterfy valve to the open exhaust you wont be getting the best performance/ fuel economy and visa versa !

To get the best exhaust and what I fitted was pacemaker extractors with a high flow steel cadaletic converter and a 2.5" straight thru exhaust with a hot dog style straight thru 24" center mufler and 24" stainless rear muffler straight thru aswell and it sounds great.. full cost $1,440 fitted ! Their is no drown at 80-90 or 90-100 or at 110 either !
It does have a great note but if you drive it normal it sounds quiet but when you boot it you know you have a sports exhaust and it does not sound like a rice burner with no rear mufler... if you know what i meen !
Hope this helps
Nic
I picked up around 8-10kws of power by fitting the exhaust and a few more by fitting a pannel filter !

I'm pretty sure Apexi sell a product that's like what you want. a butterfly in your exhaust however its not to switch exhausts its just to close it off to lower the sounds but as everyone has said, unless you suffer severe migranes or something and every little decible matters than a sports system wont really get annoying or noisey until you crank it. you'll probably end up cranking it more after you get the exhaust done anyway and forget about your quiet driving ideas.

Or you could get a straight through that isnt loud?

I think the primary idea behind this is to have the stock setup for red light racing... guy pulls up next to you with a cannon revving the nuts off his car... just as the light is about to go green you flip the switch and you've instant straight through that he didnt think you had a second ago.

yeah, thats right dpack.
i dont want it to sound or look any different to stock, most of the time. so i though this would work
and now that i look back, i think the electronic cutoff valve would be what im looking for to swap them, one on each side of y joint.

well i know that the Aston Martin Vantage  switches over to an open exhaust at 4000rpm:D

It would really be a waste of time because you'd want to be going for extractors anyway so you'd have to split it after the cat.. like KB said, just get a straight through that isnt loud, don't get a bit fancy tip and it wont look like anything different...

I dunno what it is but i've never had anyone wanting to take me on, how come everyone else has the fun!?

Its all in the attitude of the driver, we've a mini car club here that hang out in an abandonded parking lot, about the best car there is a honda civic (and thats obviously saying something!). I pulled up there one time and did a mini-burnout and pulled back out on to the road with one of them following me. Lined up side by side on a dual carriage-way, it was a ford focus (dont know if they made it to Oz or not?) but either way, i guess he's never heard of the 3.0 DOHC Diamante cos he got his ass handed to him :D
