I did a search but couldn't find what im looking for, what is the difference between the TJ1 & 2 and when did the 2 come out? I have a TJ Executive 3.5L FWD with Triptronic Tranny and drive.com.au sais that the exec came with trippy when it was changed to the TJ II in August 2002 but i thought the TJ II was the AWD one which came out DEC 02 i assume? is mine a 1 or a 2?

It sais everywhere on the rego papers and dealer papers TJ not TJII so i assume its a 1 :(

I will only list the TJ 2 Exec changes over the TJ 1 otherwise it's too complicated and frankly I cannot remember. TJ 2 Magna's had the option of AWD with some models.

Differences of TJ 2 compared to TJ 1 (Exec only)

Digital odo in the cluster
Wheelcovers
Electric aerial
Tippy 4sp auto
Seat/door trim
Series 2 badge on the trunk
I think they stopped painting the muffler black. So it's normal stainless steel colour instead.
ABS???
Head Unit
Power windows
155kw/316nm over 150kw/300nm

Geez, I think that's it.:think: There could be a few more little things but I believe I have covered most of it.

That's certainly the bulk of it! Bear in mind though, that you can get something without the S2 badge on the boot that has the digital odo and other S2 features. My sports for example has the climate control, digital odo, etc, but has no badging.

Yeah I think they unofficially call them Series 1.5's? I have seen a few late 2002 build Exec's in the caryards with the Series 2 head unit and digi odo but no power windows etc.

Wonder why Mitsu did a 'temporary' type upgrade?:confused: I mean, it was like an temporary upgrade before a more permanent upgrade a few months later.

Power windows was still an option on the Executive Series II. (...but mine has them - woot)

155kw vs 147kw is the big difference, and it jumps even more with the VRX muffler (165kw?).

S1 to S2 was a 150kW -> 155kW jump.. 163kW with the VR-X muffler.

The 147kW 3.5L was in the TH and earlier.

Mine is the series 1.5 (unofficial) exec which was built from about Sept 2001. It has the 155KW motor and the two front doors have only very small side pockets - almost useless - the space is taken up by larger side intrusion protection panels. ABS is standard, odometer is not the digital type, aircon is not the climate type. Series 2 came out in mid 2002.
Just for info.

Yeah that's weird, I think the previous owner may have been badged. My series 2 sports has a series two badge on it.

Whats yor build date? Mine is 03/03

I bought my car brand new so no chance anyone else took the badge off, if that's what you mean?

I'll find the exact month next time I look at my car, but it's an early '02 model, like March/April, from memory.

The Build date is July 02 :) hmm judging by the bits i have i think its a TJII i certainly hope so cause i want the 155kw motor not the lesser one, well it flies hehe i beat a SS commodore and its standard :D

And that's why it was dearer than an exec. All the differences between the TJ series one, MY02 and Series 2 are features which were previously available on more upmarket models (except the wheelcovers).

From memory i dont have a series II badge, but i'll have to check. The dealers website states its a TJII, but the book just says TJ.
But i have:
digital ODO
electric aerial
cruise control
ABS
NO elec windows though.
Build date july 02, first regoed in september 02.
I'm assuming its a series II lol.

OK, this is what i've found from the mits site:
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!mit_certified.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=2905275&current_rec=1&total_rec=43&sort_type=1&model_id=57&badge_name=Executive&body_id=2&price_min=2500&price_max=35000&keyword=TJ&state_id=-1&search_distance=50&mit_style=Executive|2
VIN = 6MMTJ8D422T049536
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!mit_certified.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=2418086&current_rec=2&total_rec=43&sort_type=1&model_id=57&badge_name=Executive&body_id=2&price_min=2500&price_max=35000&keyword=TJ&state_id=-1&search_distance=50&mit_style=Executive|2
VIN = 6MMTJ8D423T064695

My car:
VIN = 6MMTJ8D422T046745

But then throw this in there, an MY02 with the same VIN as the series II:
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!mit_certified.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=2533548&current_rec=9&total_rec=43&sort_type=1&model_id=57&badge_name=Executive&body_id=2&price_min=2500&price_max=35000&keyword=TJ&state_id=-1&search_distance=50&mit_style=Executive|2
VIN = 6MMTJ8D422T037791

And then this series 1 really fuggs sh!t up:
http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!mit_certified.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=2947356&current_rec=17&total_rec=43&sort_type=1&model_id=57&badge_name=Executive&body_id=2&price_min=2500&price_max=35000&keyword=TJ&state_id=-1&search_distance=50&mit_style=Executive|2
VIN = 6MMTJ8D421T017271

So after my little research trip, i have no fuggen clue what my car is LMAO.

***EDIT***
By the looks of it, they kept the same VIN system from the MY02 to the series II, but you'd be able to tell after a certain build #, my build # is higher than any MY02 i've found, but lower than any series II i've found, but only slightly lower. So i'd say i'm closer to a series II than to a series 1 lmao.

Option codes on the build plate just to get everyone excited. Depending on your spec trim you may or may not have these codes. My Sports, for instance just says E35 (3.5L) and D05 (5 speed auto), but has cruise, climate, power, blah blah.

OPTION CODES
DATA PLATE
The Data Plate is attached to the right hand side of the bulkhead (adjacent to the compliance plate) in
the engine compartment and is stamped with vehicle option codes, trim codes and a daily body sequential
build number.
Option

A03 Driver air bag D05 5 Speed A/T
A05 Driver & passenger air bags E32 3.0 litre S4 V6
A08 Brunei tropical kit E35 3.5 litre S4 V6

AA5 ABS & A/C

AB0 Driver SRS, ABS, A/C & Cruise Control
AB4 A/C, Cruise Control & LPG

W37 Alloy wheel 15”
XM9 NZ Export pack
XN0 NZ Export VR–X
XN7 NZ Rear Garnish, Dual SRS & A/C

Something else that is interesting is that all the TJ VRXs carry the VIN of a Magna Sports, for eg this vin for a VRX off carsales: 6MMTJ9S421T023818, my VIN (TJ2 SPorts) 6MMTJ9S423T0XXXXX. VRX was an options pack.

YEY!!!
Just got a call from Mitsubishi customer service department, my car is a Series II.
The lady said it also hasn't had something to do with the fuel line checked? Musta been a recall or something, anyway i've gotta go into a Mits dealer to have it checked, and she said while i was there they should put a series II badge on my boot for me :).
So in saying that, if you have a 2002 model TJ, if its VIN build number is after 046745, then it'll defineately be a series II.

In theory yes, but because of the age of the engine might be abit less (6-7). It's got a nice note now that i'm very happy with. Your best bet is to find one 2nd hand that someone has parted for an aftermarket exhaust.
