What's the difference in sound quality using the speaker line outs and then high - low level convertors, and opposed to using RCA pre outs on a Pioneer DEH-P1Y (info here = http://www.pioneer.com.au/car_entertainment/accessories/dehp1y/index.html)

The reason I ask is that using the RCA pre outs I get an awesome alternator whine, however, if I use the speaker line outs and a high - low level convertor then it dissamapears

Cheers :)

From what I've heard, it makes the signal to noise ratio a bit worse, but only to a small extent. Unless you're after a high quality SQ install, I'd recommend using the high level inputs with the adaptor. Probably easier to do if you're gone to the trouble of wiring it up than buying RCA cables that are better insulated etc.

The reason why you're getting engine whine with the RCA's is because you're probably using a cheap sh!t brand. I used to get it as well, i then upgraded to stinger RCA cables and the noise completely dissappeared.

It's all wired up already, it was running off the RCA's for about 8 months, then this whine started :(

so it's just a matter of changing from the RCA pre outs to the speaker line outs and plugging the RCA's into the convertor...

But yeah, they're all high quality RCA's and fully insulated and all that crap ;)

There's a reason people use RCA's, but if you're running it with the speaker level line in, and it sounds fine to you, there's not much people on a forum will be able to help you with.

The reason I'm asking here is that I haven't wired it up permanently, I only twisted and taped the wires on the front speakers to see whether it got rid of the whine, which it did... Hence, now I am asking whether there is a difference when it's wired up properly with fronts and rears using the speaker line outs, and the sub using the RCA's :)

Where are the RCA's located?
Is it possible that the insulation may have worn down on them due to friction eg. a door closing?

They're run from the HU back behind the pedals, and through the plastic tubing under the drivers' door sill, and pop out through the carpet just before the B-pillar into the amp.

I've eliminated the RCA's as the source of the noise by pulling the HU out and running different rca's straight from the HU to the amp, with no other cabling nearby. The source of the noise seems to be something to do with the RCA pre-outs on the HU.....

hmm..... I might try this! :) I'll see if it helps my alt whine.

I always wanted to have a fully balanced high level transmission system! Bit different to speaker outputs, but still worth a shot methinks. I'll sacrifice SQ at the moment to be able to listen to music at less than the 70% of h/u volume that it takes to drown out my angry hornet/supercharger. stupid thing.

That was the issue I was having.. Not being able to listen to music at soft volumes without cracking the ****s... lol

Now I just gotta fix my radio reception issue.... Hmm.....
