View Full Version : 3.5L 96 Verada getting some work done...

Just got my 1996 Verada back from the mechanic..
Replaced the front brake pads and got a skim done on the front disc, they told me when I picked up the car that I have these two major problems that need fixing ASAP.
Water pump is leaking and Exhaust Flex Joint is noisy.
Now I knew the car was making some noise and I had asked them to check it out so the exaust flex is no shock at all.. The water pump on the other hand is a MASSIVE shock..
I just drove from Perth down to Albany/Denmark no more than 3 weeks ago and I havent noticed any increase in car temperature at all..
Quoted:
$500 for water pump inc fitting.
$400 for flex part of exhaust.
So yeah.. Im getting more quotes this week, will keep this thread updated.

yes, the water pump is imporant.. 'cos if thats gone.. u might overheat and wreck the motor.. so keep a close on the coolant level and temp guage.. dont cook the motor! while the pump is being done, might be wise to have both the timing belt and seals replaced as well!
with the rattle noise from the front engine pipe.. thats important too.. the welds break inside the flex section causing the horrible rattle noise, worse cold.. if broken metal pieces fly through the pipe.. they will end up breaking the cat convertor, and other mufflers.. so wise to get that fixed.. muffler places can chop the section out and repair it cheaply.. or, u could score a complete engine pipe ( improved one ) from mitsu spares for 300 or so bucks!
good luck

Yeah, I'm keeping my eye on the water levels etc..
Not sure about the timing belt and seals, I have a feeling they might have been done by the past owner.. Will get them checked out anyway.
When you say "score a complete engine pipe ( improved one ) from mitsu spares for 300" should I be asking for a Verada/magna one or a different one if its improved...?
Or should I just go down to my local Carline exhaust dude and get an entire new extractor/exaust system put on it?
Cheers!

Exhaust flex pipe ignore i would or wait till u got enough for extractors, cause if u pay 400 for the flex for another 200 or so u get extractors.
The water pump $150 or so for the pump so ur getting charged $350 for install
My pump is leaking right now and the levels are pretty low but i also have to do my timing belt which is way overdue. Im a DIY man at heart so it will only cost the parts without install.
But ask in some places how much just for fitting of the water pump.
So maybe see if u can DIY it if not best bet to just go to a few mechanics, look for the relatively small ones which dont just have apprentices doing the work and charging full price, no offence to anyone.

Oh and the exhausts on all magnas/verads from what i know are the same except for ralliart.

Hi, had water pump, timing belt, drive belts and cam/crank seals all replaced recently on my Ke Verada. Cost me $425 all up, but used non-genuine parts. Non-genuine pumps are ok but make sure it is made in Japan (there are some cheaper chinese units out there apparently) - mine cost $80.

Crazy..
They just got back to me with an exact price.
This is the break down:
Water pump, $250.00
Timing Belt, $110.00
Coolant, $50.00
4 hours work at $66 per hour, $264.00
Total: $674.00
LouisK & TF_ADVAN did you do the work yourself? I thought the water pump was a major job on a 3.5L mitsubishi?
Re: Exhaust I will get extractors in a few weeks, no point spending $400 on a flex piece fitted..

Ok Colin at Carline Exhausts can fix the exhaust for $180 all done!! That’s a lot cheaper than the $450 they quoted me!!!!!!
But he did say that extractors " Pacemakers" are only $960 fitted with two new exhaust tips.
It’s a tough one but either way $180 is MUCH CHEAPER and will give me better fuel consumption because at the moment its going to be bad on fuel.. " Im still getting 500k's from a tank!!
So yeah I’m happy with that quote!! Just got to get a new quote on the water pump/timing belt now…

Just got a quote from Kmart Service… They said $985 for water pump, timing belt, tensioner and seals with coolant.
And $487 for exhaust flex.
Owch…

This thread is for my own personal sake so I know what prices have been given to me but if anyone has any experiences with these problems or just good old opinions about mechanics then please speak up and let me know what you think.
Cheers fellaz!

$960 for pacemakers installed seems very dear... Do a search for pacemakers and compare prices of other ppls installs.

Yeah, just looking into prices for the exhaust now..
WJ Automotive have the best price so far for the other items:
$250 - Water pump
$250 - Timing belt + tensioner and seals
$50 - Coolant
$264 - Labour
= $814 total.
Crazy how these parts can cost so damn much..

Well to some water pump is a major thing to others not that major but u do have to remove a fair few things to get at it.
Its kinda worse that the current water pump in my car didnt last anywhere near as long as the last one, last one 135K or so this one only 90K.
And i dont know why u really want the flex pipe fixed, its only a flex pipe and no fuel usage will not change.

The reason the water pumps go is that very few mechanics know how to correctly tension the timing belt. This puts strain on the pump and it goes.
If it is leaking or noisy, change it straight away, it is not only the coolant you have to worry about, if the bearing lets go you have no cam belt either and you then have no valves as they smash into the pistons.

That sounds dear to me.
Work on my KE verada was completed at Ultra-tune (Fairfield NSW) - charged me $225 labour and I supplied all the parts at a cost of $200.
Suggest you shop around - you might be able to get the parts cheaper at some of these spare parts shops and get a seperate price for labour. Suggest you do all the seals at the same time - there not that dear.

Thats dear for a repco pump...You can get Japenese aftermarket units here in Sydney for around $90.I have used this on my car and it probably is the OM equivalent. I have used Dayco belts etc and don't seem to have a problem. Suggest you try giving Sam or Mons at Guildford spares (NSW) a call on (02) 96323888 a call. They might be abke to send the parts you require out to you in perth. That is where I get my parts from and you can't beat these guys for the price of Water Pumps, Belts, Seals etc.
LouisK
Regarding the exhaust noise, mine had a bad grumbling noise at low revs. Thought it was my exhaust at first. When the pump and belt were replaced, it disappeared. Turned out to be a tensioner issue.

Hey AlphA !
Ive done 178,000ks in my 1998 TF 3.0lt magna and recentley had a full exhaust inc extractors and cadaletic converter but "DID NOT" have to replace the flexi joint !
You may have caught it on something like a kurb or speed hump and damaged it !!
I would be going to magnawreck (kenwick) or mitsubi (malaga) and seeing what a second hand one costs !
It is just a braded pipe and works as a flexi joint because of the substantial twist in the east west mounted front wheel drive motor !
As for water pumps I have had my car for 4.5 yrs now since it was 45,000ks and now at 178,000ks and have never replaced the water pump !
it could very well be the tension on the belt... thats the external belt... not the internal cam shaft timming belt compulsory change at 100,000ks !
You need a good mechanic i have one in como perth !
For a full front to rear exhaust system fitted:
pacemakers extractors
S/steel high flow cad converter (15% restriction only)
2.5" exhaust tube front to rear
24" staight thu hot dog center muffler
24" stainless high flow straight thu rear muffler
Fully fitted drive in drive out for $1,440
Carline exhausts in North Perth
You can NOT do with out the flexi pipe because it also houses the exhaust sensor and as I said its for the twist !

Hmm no idea why the exclamation marks after each sentence
The pulley tensioner self adjusting what are u gonna adjust there
a full exhaust can be had for less then $1400 if u look around.
With water pumps it can go at any time so if u have had yours for so long then ur lucky.
And if i remeber correct the sensor isnt housed by the flex pipe but before it.

the water pump runs off the timing belt, main engine drive belt under the timing covers.. not the external belts u can see from under the bonnet in the engine bay!
yes, the belt is tensioned by an auto tensioner, but as anyone who has done a timing belt on a 3rd gen also knows that there is a tensioner pulley as well.. which is to be nipped up ever so slightly to get the correct belt tension.. other than that.. dont touch the tensioner pulley and just remove and refit the auto adjuster!
the oxygen sensor is located after the the flex section of the engine pipe.. meaning.. its moving along towards the cat convertor!

*** UPDATE ***
Ok, it was 1 week ago that I got my Verda's front brakes replaced and rotors machined and the new one have been nothing but CRAP!!!! , Bendix ultimate + machined rotors and they squeal like pigs and make a god awful grinding noise at random times (NEVER when I try and show the guys at the mechanics who fitted them) but every time I’m braking for the lights or a car in front and im generally doing under 40kmph.
The thing that pisses me off big time... The mechanic that done them won’t do jack about it.. They took my rims off, "dropped them on the ground in front of me!!" yeah my 18" rims got dropped on the ground without a care in the world... The whole time the guy was acting as if I’m full of crap.. He then dropped the pads on the ground (idiot... they do get hot) he then picked the pads up put them back on and said oh yeah they are fine. *I had to ask him to check the other side!!
And now I’m sitting at home with my Verada parked out the front with what I would call the worlds loudest brakes that make grinding noises.
This mechanic is the same one that told me when fitting the brakes that my water pump is staffed and it would be about ~$450ish + my Exhaust flex piece is stuffed that’s why it sounds like a truck They quoted ~$450 for that as well + $300ish on top for timing belts and seals etc etc...
What really grinds my gears *Worse than the sound of my brakes* is the fact that in the last 7 days my car has lost no water at all, has no signs of leaking coolant etc... And is not overheating in anyway (I now have a bottle of coolant in my car anyway )
On a lighter side I have found a mechanic that I will take my car to from now on!
RPW in Osborne Park W.A.

What can I say...
2nd hand flex pipe + K&N POD Filter for MAS sensor Kit both fitted for $308 INC GST
Fantastic service and I will be back again!!!
Next mods will be the Lowering + extractors.
RPW, Thank you for the great service.

I will not name the Mechanic that has given me extremely bad service + tried to rip me off.
But if you do live in the Roleystone area please send me a PM prior to getting any service work done within the local area. Trust me it’s worth the trip to Osborne Park!

Thanks for the good word. Glad we were able to help you and look forward to working with you more in the future.
With the break squealing - itcould be either a bad set of brakes pads, or the rotors not machined properly. Also if they didn't fit the anti squeal / rattle spacers back that could cause the squealing as well.
AlphA

Hey Mitsiman hows things,
Well after getting the K&N filter + flex piece I went back to them and they checked the brakes out again, they are swearing to me that it is my fault for driving hard  but that doesnt explaine the grinding noise + extreemly loud squeeking sounds.. Wish I got it done at RPW but didnt know about you guys then.
Looks like Ive just gotta put up with it now. :doubt:
* I did have a look when they checked them out and the anti squeal / rattle spacers are intact and inplace.

When it comes to brakes squealing noises and grinding are not good and need to be checkdout and sorted out. Your whole life depends upon them - don't wait. It is one of the areas on cars that I insist must be 100% at every opportunity
