Hi there, my friends TS V6 is smokey after start up or prolonged idling. Diagnosed as worn valve stem seals. Does anybody now if this is a big job (cost$ at a mechanic) and can be handled DIY. Are there any additives that can rectify this. Your advice would be appreciated.

You could try one of the stop smoke additives but they are limited in their effectiveness.

The stem seal can be a diy job if you are a reasonable hand with a spanner. Not really reccomended for the non mechanically inclined.:D

Usually after 150,000 or more, depends on the car and how well its looked after.

try using the search button "valve stem seals"

But personally I would ring around and get quotes from local mechanics, dont go to Mitsubishi they charge alot on labour.
Speaking from my own car there, ring a round

good luck with it

hey Louis
i just did the head's on my second gen..
about $350 for the head skim and valve cut and to replace the seals (i provided the new ones) + they redid the valve guides 2 :)
as you should really skim a head before it goes back on!
+ i think you might find some extra things that need replacing as i did :(
and that price is just for dropping of the heads at the engineering place..
all the pulling out of it.. i did that (saved plenty on labour :P)
other than that.. you will probably need a new seal kit (pricey bout 200+ for full kit)
and i dare say you will be paying a hell of a lot for labour. as it ain't a fun job AT ALL!!
so yeh.. enjoy :)

Hi,

the heads don't need to come for Valve Stem Seals do they. Head seems perfectly good other than the smoke on start up.

Smoke on start up could be your piston rings starting to wear out..
does the car push out blue smoke when you put your foot down hard?
well i took the heads off for the stem seals.... mind you i had to replace 1 valve.

This is geared more so towards the Astron, but it would be similar - http://magna.trynsave.net/index.php?title=Valve_stem_seal_replacement
As you will read you dont need to reef the head off to do them :)
