I hear all the time that the Magna's stock cat is more than fine unless you are unleashing more serious ponies (over 160 or 170 kw's or something)... otherwise you could be spending money for naught... well unless it's gone bung of course.

Ok for all the people that just dribble from both sides of their mouths and really dont know what the are on about let me fill you in !
by memory from what a professional said when fitting a full front to rear exhaust inc:
Pacemaker extractors
steel cad converter
2.5" exhaust tube front to rear
24" hotdog style center muffler
24" oval high flow S/S rear muffler
$1,440. fitted drive in drive out !
The steel cad converter was $350 and its included in the $1,440
For the people that think noise is made from cad converters it is actualy made from the exhaust gasses excaping up the exhaust pipe with or with out a cadaletic converter !
The old V8's did not have cad converters and made a hell of a noise !
Mufflers silence noise not cadaletic converters!
Now for your question on Cad converters:
The standard mitsi cadaletic converter restricion is about 55%
Standard cad converters high flow restriction is 35%
The new steel ones you are 15%
Now with all that gas going down a 2.5" inch exhaust and then into the cad converter... it like reducing the exhaust tube to 1.25" (thu a 55% restrictive cad converter) then back up to 2.5" exhaust !!! you do the maths !
Fitting the exhaust has been the single biggest power increase and I have also fitted K&N pannel filter before the exhaust and fitted a unichip after the exhaust was fitted !
And Tonba... just be caufull who you take advise from because a lot of people unfortunatly in the infinite wisdom give very bad advise !
Just go and reed my thread on "help needed ! ralliart callipers"
I had 2 completely opposite opinions on the same thing so one of them are 100% wrong but gave the advise believing they are 100% right and both say they have done the same converson... go figure !!
mate... do your home work...
Im off to wanneroo on the 31st to see how my lap times have improved !

Samurai... you are the sort of people that really spoil a well run site by insighting or solisiting a negative response from people who really "do" have something worth contributing !
At least I spoke to a professional and thats more than you have and I have spent around $8,000 on my car to improve the performance and handling and yes I do race/compete in my magna frequently !
So when i say "some people" have no idea on this site... I was refering to people like you... And your talking from your... where ? Oh the 7th planet in the solar system ?
good for you Samurai ! Its about time for worrior princess to go to bed isnt it ?

How do you know wether or not samurai has spoken to an exaust fitter or not? or even what his job title is? he could be an exaust fitter for all you know.
No need to ark up and get all defensive when being shot down....when you claim people are just dribbling compared to your knowledge, you're just asking for crap.
Samurai has been around on here a lot longer than you and contributed far more than you have, so tread lightly before you try to go around calling members names, mmkay sunshine?
btw, its warrior. earth also happens to be the 3rd planet. to say a post has come from the 8th planet is a pretty far fetched accusation.

And yet another rodent having a dump and scampering off into the darkness further degenerating the thread !
If you guys have nothing better to do then try and draw negative responses from active member contributing something worth while on this site then you my friends... are really pitiful replicas of insignificant proportions !
Its people like you that ruin a well run site for the true magna enthusiasts !
And on that note I will not be taking part in this thread any further !

needabetacar, I know that conflicting info can be frustrating, but your attitude in this thread leaves a lot to be desired. Just take it down a notch or three... thanks.

Uh, everyone settle. Everyone has different opinions on things, just because a "professional" told you one thing doesn't make it gospel. I've heard different opinions on the same thing from several "professionals" before. It's just a matter of sifting through the bull**** and finding the parts that are truth.
When I got my full exhaust system, I got a 3" metal cat high flow cat, and I can safely say it made a fair difference (given I got extractors and a full 2.5" system aswell) But it's really up to the individual if they wanna fork out the moola for a new cat.

The only thing that two mechanics will agree on is that the third one is wrong.
Remember that ;)
Anyway, I personally am considering a high flow cat later on only simply because the stock one is 2.25" inlet and outlet and my exhaust is 2.5". Just want to remove the bottleneck.
Other than that I haven't really heard much about great gains from them. It's more to do with ensuring your entire system is free flowing and avoiding bottlenecks were possible

I did Physics in high school :) (I failed but shhhhh)
Annnnnnnnnnnyway to bring this thread back on topic, I am also interested to know if its worth replacing the cat converter. When I got my Cat back done I chose not to get the whole system done as I had read that the cat and all its asociated piping etc on a 3rd gen magna were pretty good anyway and only a hinderance at 170kw+ (or there about)
However if someone can provide evidence or personal experiences that replacing the Cat converter is worth it (in terms of performance) than I might look at it.
And needabetacar, perhaps you should not resort to primary school insults, especially when they are wrong.

Does anyone know roughlly at what K's (engine wise) it is a good idea to get a cat changed?
Eg: timming belt every 100K's

I wouldn't mind knowing this either, my old muffler was all rusty and filled with crap, wondering if my cat would be the same.

Well what you really want to know then is just one thing and thats the cfm (cubic feet per minute, it would be in US units, not SI wouldn't it:roll: ). I woulda thought that any manufacturer would place the flow of a "high flow" item on either the packaging or on their website. All you'd need then is the flow of the standard one to compare it with.
