Hi gang ! (jeez...I sound like Bill Cosby)

My 03 TL is due for a 60,000 km service next week and I want them to look a the rear window rubber seal.

It is all but fully peeled of the black paint and in some exposed areas is looking like it is perishing. I am very concerned as the car is only 2 years old and already I face the prospect of water leaking around a dodgy seal and causing rust.

My questions...Is this a warranty issue ?

Who has had theirs replaced under warranty and how did you get them to agree. As far as I am concerned this is a faulty design that they should replace.

If not replaced under warranty...any ideas on the cost ?

Yes this is a warranty Issue. They (Mitsu) are very aware of this problem. Don't take any C**P from a dealer if there refuse to replace under warranty.

Excellent news..thank you.

I had heard hints towards it being a known 'defect' around here but just wanted to get some facts for 'when' the dealer tries it on. :D

I guess I should also book the car in for a re-tint on the back window as I heard they replace the glass as well. I just had it tinted.

Cheers

Replacement depends on how bad the seal has deteriorated. If the paint has come off and it's not too bad, you could get some type of (vinyl-based?) paint to fix it up. I plan to fix mine when I can be bothered.

If they want to get out of it they will turn around and say you've put something on your windows like windex. Mine went all the way to MMAL, but then they wouldnt even support me. Took it to another Sydney dealer, had it replaced no worries, unfortunately, this dealer has ceased to be mitsubishi, so I cant take it there anymore.

Here is some ammo if they do give you grief:

A lot, the rear windscreen is usually broken in the process.

I have the same problem but I have 20% tint. Regardless of whether they replace the window under warrantly, I highly doubt they would replace the 20% tint. If anything, I assume they would only do the legal 35%. As such, my window will stay as is because 1) I love 20% tint:D and 2) I'm not going to pay to have the window redone in 20%.

03 KL GTVi

Service Manager pointed out rear seal problem to me about 6 months ago.

New window and seal (They apparantly come as one unit)

Rear Window retinted to match side windows.

Mitsubishi covered all costs.

No arguments. No problems.

Better built (Not convinced!!)

Better backed (Most definately!!)

See my thread.

I think you would be pushing your luck for it to be covered, some of those warranties are not worth the paper their printed on. Let me guess, it's one of those "service your car through us and we'll give you a warranty" ones - have a look at the fine print of it.

I sure did have a good look at the fine print, i have to get it serviced every 10,000K's BUT i can do it at any place i like aslong as they stamp my book.
It's not a 3rd party warranty its actually one set up by the dealer i bought the car off and i know a few people who got things fixed with them without hassle, i wouldn't have paid an extra $500 for Gold A warranty if i didn't think it was gonna benefit me :)

Ahh okay, they have already (potentially) made their money off you. Warranties like that are like car insurance, they will make a fair bit of money out of it provided they dont get too many claims.

True but yeah, i didn't mind the $500 i mean i get 3 years bumper-bumper warranty it will probly be another $500 in their pocket but just incase i blow a motor or something expensive happens its good to have :)

I bought a TN magna off a dealer 2 years ago for $4,000 yeah a bit steep but it was an elante in showroom nick, i got a free 6 month warranty with AVWG (Aussie Vehicle Warranty Group) which a lot of dealers go through and it was the most ****ed up ever, the car rocketed to 16v on the little meter and died on me, they replaced the computer and it did it again, they then replaced the alternator and it did it again, finally after $600 they said, oh it was the regulator only $50 to fix.
I tried to claim on warranty and they said, read the book it sais we DO NOT cover consequental damage, which gets them out of ANY claim as damage is always caused by something, WANKERS!!!!

I noticed the shiny vinyl outer layer of the rear window rubber had almost entirely gone on a 2003 TL magna sitting in a local Mitsu car yard. Must be a fault with the rubber or a just a cheap seal. My rear seal seems ok at the moment.

Is this the external one around the rear windscreen? And it looks like paint is peeling off the rubber or something?

My 99 TH did it, as does my 03 TL. Front does it too.

Does anyone have a picture of the sort of thing we're talking about? I've got 12 months left on the warranty and want Mitsi to spend up big on repairing all the little things!

See my thread (link first page), and the troubles I had

Things that make you want to scream!!!

The rear glass they replace it with is in effect larger than the screen it replaces, and the new surrounding rubber is about 4mm wide black rubber (unpainted) with a deep channel

I think you're looking at around $440 fitted. Apparently they have to replace the window too. Comes as a single part.
