This is a weird one...

I can start my car, and as soon as the car starts if i give it gas to increase the revs, its fine.

eg, i can keep my foot on the gas and keep the car reving at 2000RPM, i can even shift into gear and drive.

But the second I take my foot of the pedal, and it tries to idle, it chokes and cuts out.

Bad plugs
Dirty injecters\fuel\jets
Dirty air cleaner
Blocked fuel filter
Weak fuel pump
Idle set to low
Incorrect timing
That should keep ya busy for a while.:D

I run duel fuel, cant remember if it happens on lpg and petrol or just petrol.

If it happens on both, or just petrol, then we could rule a few things out...

If it happens on LPG aswell, then its not the fuel pump or injectors right.

But if it doesnt happen on LPG, then its prob one of them?

could be ISC or dead battery too

I was thinking about ISC, but dont know enough about cars to know what a dead ISC would do.

Its not the battery, because the car starts fine as many times as I want.

Okai, tested the car, problems happens on LPG and Petrol.

So what can we rule out? not the fuel pump and not the injectors, anything else?

Ill play around with the timing and throttle stop screw tomorrow, How could the timing and throttle stop screw just change itself? ill check it anyways though.

But apart from that I have no idea what to do, is there a way I can check the ISC without having to replace it? Ill check the plugs, they were changed about 7 months ago, unless one of the plugs came off somehow.

Check the plugs to see if the gap is ok and that they are all burning the same. If one is different you may have a loose or dead lead but you would normally get rough running.

What actual car and engine do you have so that I can scan you the isc and idle adjustments.

Its unusal for the timing to just change unless the dizzie is loose or the computy is suss. Sometimes just a sick battery can cause these problems. The voltage can be to low at idle to maintain the computer.:)

Its a TR 4 cycl.

Ill hook my battery up to another car via jumper leads, and test it out, but im pretty sure its not the battery because I just went through the whole new battery thing not long ago plus new alternator charge regulator.

I played with the timing the other day, just retarding it so I could run normal fuel, so maybe I didnt tighten the bolt enough and its moved?
But then the car acts the same throughout the rev range, no pinging, just at idle.
Revs climb at the same rate as they did before.

If you've got Broadband theres a 43meg download of the whole TR TS manual at http://tinyurl.com/9bnl6 if its still there. Thanx to jellico on that one.

If you dont I'll have a search and send you the relevant pages.:D

Sorry, ive got the manual, I should of said that before, thanks to the great man himself.

But its really no help to me, as I cant ask it what to do when the car doesnt idle.

Ill check the timing, plugs and raise the idle tomorrow.

Is there a way to check the ISC? does it sound like a faulty ISC to the people that know?

Actually theres prob ways to diagnose the ISC in the manual yes? ive got to get on the other computer and have a good look at it.

That should be in the manual, maybe.:)

Not sure if it's the same on the 4cyl cars, but on mine I had a problem where every time I brought the car to a stop, the idle would drop, struggle to regain and then die.

It was caused by the fact I'd disconnected the battery and reset the ECU, and cos my car needs new rear plugs nad a tune, the engine not performing at the factory spec that the ECU resets too. It took a few days, but hte ECU re-learnt the condition of my engine, and idles at hte correct RPM now (except a touch rough cos it still needs new plugs cos I'm lazy).

Have you d/c the battery lately?

I unplugged the TPS it and the car pretty much acts the same, so im gonna take a stab and say its this.

How much is a new one?

Ill get one from the wreckers, but knowing that its been sitting there for months if not years im doubting it will still work.

PS. where is the ISC? ive looked through the workshop manual but there is no diagram of it, just refrences to it.

Thank bloody god... I was checking over the engine again this morning playing with some things and saw the vacuum hose on the top of the rocker cover had come off :bowrofl:

Fixed the problem right up :D

Thank everyone for their help though.
