The best? From my experience:
Michelin Pilot Preceda - I'd rate these 9 out of 10 for wet weather, and 8.5 out of 10 for dry weather. Sidewalls are fairly firm but tyres give good wear rate, about 25,000Kms for a set. About $300 each for 235/45/R17.
Bridgestone Potenza S03 - 9.5 for wet weather and 8.5 for dry weather. Same sidewall firmness as Precedas and good wear rate, attained just over 25,000Kms a set. $320 each for 235/45/R17.
Falken Azenis ST115 - 9 for wet weather (very wide sipes), 9 for dry weather. Very firm sidewalls, very soft compound gives awesome grip in the dry, they don't seem to want to overheat in majority of road conditions which is saying a lot for a big car like a Magna. 20,000Kms a set, and $290/each. For track use I recommend the Azenis realsport RT215 which are semi-slicks and even stickier.

they seem quite expensive :S um i just have nankang. not the best tyres in the world but i have never lost control and they are $150 each for 18's and my last set lasted 45000 and they still have good tread left. the ones on the rear look as good as new with 45000 kms so i only have to replace the fronts. bloody round abouts :(

Brand-wise the best tires are: Pirelli, Michelin, Bridgestone, Dunlop. Generally in that order (i have a mate who worked at the Tyre Factory, who told me this). This is for overall quality, but the actual tires ie Bridgestone Dounts, it all depends on wat u want them for and how much u want to spend. Pirelli and Michelin r the moist expensive but will last the longest. Do u want them for handling? racing? general use?

I have the Falken Azensis ST-115's on my AWD Sports.
Bought as a package with wheels for $1600 in Sydney.
Based on the wheel price I was paying $200 each for the tyres.
Agree with the wet and dry grip comments.
With the AWD you need to be a lunatic to get a loss of grip even in the wet.
You need to work on the tyre pressures so the outer edge of the tread doesn't wear too quickly.
Based on distance so far I reckon that I will get close to 30,000 K's from a set. I suspect that the FWD result would be a bit worse.
BTW I am fairly hard on tyres, live on the edge of the Hills. Short up and down as well as twisty runs every day. i.e. lots of acceleration, braking and cornering. not a lot of cruising.
Elsewhere the tyre life would be much better.

How about you tell us how much you want to spend rather than whats the best tyre?
If your service is anything to go by then you want the cheapest you can get..

fair enough, i want average price tyres - from $69 - 90
i have some in mind, i check before ones that i have prices are
bridgestone = $89.00 *4 = $356
Other Ones can't remmber the name of it = $69 *4=$276
Bob Jane = $79 *4 = 79 = $316 i have to replace them really soon, because the front are unroadworthy, and rear and just about the same:nuts:

There's another better option. Places exist which sell near new tyres. Sometimes they are unknown brands but are much better and sometimes cheaper than re-treads.
If someone can't afford new tyres, they can't afford to drive - it's a pretty simple concept.
Tyres are one thing that you can't skimp on. Next to the driver, tyres are the next important thing in a car. A lot of people let it slide if they fitted dodgy tyres with the intent to get the right ones a few weeks later. Alot of the time nothing will be done about it until something goes wrong because the issue was 'fixed'.
How many people here have popped a tyre, fitted the spare and driven without a spare for a week or two?

What type of bridgestones are these? sounds a bit cheap as most of them go for $98-$125 each.
Barwin seems to be ok too not sure if anyone else uses these.

I think quite a number of people cannot afford new tyres so it is a bit harsh.
I know in fact quite a few ppl buy 2nd hand but in good condition. Not to mention some of these are branded 2nd hand tyres.

They may / probably be better - not guarenteed and don't worry, I wasn't having a shot at your post.
What do you mean it's a Commonwealth car so it doesn't matter?

Tyre factory re-treads are dodgy!
At least go to tyrepower, sure they cost $7 more per tyre, but you get a lifetime warranty on the tread opposed to 1 year at TTF.
Or just dont even buy tyres, just drive round on the rims.
And back when i was earning very little money, it was either $32 per tyre for re-treads or $99 per tyre brand new. None were available 2nd hand, so i went the re-tread route.

I think quite a number of people cannot afford new tyres so it is a bit harsh.
Why is it harsh? Good tyres aren't the luxury people seem to think they are. Try telling the relative of someone who's died due to your car not gripping that you skimped on the tyres.
Half the members here would drink half the cost of two new tyres most weekends. Gee, two or three sober weekends and you've got two noob's up front.
The possible cost far transends the dollar cost we place on something like tyres.

i agree with both statements... when i got my car it came with 4 new retreads... my dad didn't let me drive it until there was new tyres on the car. we opted for the cheapest bob jane tyres... those all rounders ones... they squeeled around every corner, in the wet they were appauling. Later on when i got my 15" elite wheels, i needed new tyres again to fit them... i got bridgestone ER-592s... and well all i can is good tyres on a car is a must... i've had a few close calls in the wet with and without good tyres... i'd prefer to have good tyres on my car, and for others to consider having good tyres too.
also good tyres also make the ride smoother and quieter... these bridgestones i have are much softer compound to my old tyres... road noise was cut in half almost.
i will never go back to cheap tyres, no matter how much it costs to replace.
my 2.6 cents (<--- damn i love that line... geddit 2.6??? hehehhee :bowrofl: )

As a long time student I have had to put up with cheep tyres for a while.
If I stopped drinking for a weekend the money I save could put the free air in the tyres.
When I was in Darwin, the Bob Jane All Rounders were usually called "out of rounders", I don't know if it was the road heat that killed them but I found that I could get cheep imported tyres, sometimes they were fantastic, sometimes they were only good at holding the corner of the car up, and not much else. Imported tyres never seemed to like gravel roads either and they used to peel the tread off.
I would ask around for pairs of 2nd hand tyres that the rich people can afford to replace when two are worn down and they replace all four. Which is the ideal. Maybe pay the extra for better front tyres, dunno. But retreads sux, no grip and they don't last long, they are also prone to delaminating on gravel roads.
good luck

Car manufacturers spend millions of dollars on developing their products and when it comes to tyres, Magna ended up with Bridgestone RE 92. So - that would be the best tyre.

also wat he hasnt mentioned ppl, but he did in the other thread, is he's looking at 14" tyres, so around the $90 mark for bridgestone 14" rubber sounds like an alrite thing! if it was 17s then yeah'd be worried, but it aint!
oh and thanks magna_evo for not doin the whole cheap-is-all-i-can-go-for-now thing :D
*Edit* Bob jane have 3 14" tyres in their catalogue (http://www.bobjane.com.au/Specials/SmallCars.asp):

Your mate obviously does not know much about anything, let alone tyres, if he thinks he can classify the performance of a product by the brand only. Every brand makes good and bad tyres, including Pirelli. It depends all about the application.

Want the quietest smoothest ride with good performance.
Have heard the ST115's are quietest performance tyre on market???
What would you guys go with??
Can get Precda's $266 or ST115's $222...both on sale.
