View Full Version : creaky suspension fixed - now I find back tyres are rubbing suspension arms

A little while ago I posted that the front end of my whiteline works suspension was creaky over bumps. Well, I got it fixed today. I dropped it in to MRT performance in Sydney for the day to find the problem and they said the springs moved a bit when you turn the steering wheel. They put some insulation above the spring (some sort of gasket type ring I assume) and now it is quiet and beautiful. I'm really happy with their work and customer service in following this up.

Now, to the next bloody issue. They said my back tyres are rubbing the suspension arms. Apparently it's only when the wheels are fully 'drooped' and not when sitting flat but it's obviously happening as there is noticable wear on the tyres. They told me to take it up with Bob Jane's (who sold me the wheels and tyres). They said it's not the aftermarket suspension as the geometry hasn't changed and it still travels through the same arc.
I called Bob Jane's who put me on to Mullins (wheel manufacturer). The guy at Mullins was very understanding and talked to me for quite a while but said basically it's down to Bob Jane's as they sold me the wheels and tyres. He seems to think the tyres may be a bit too wide on those wheels.
They are 235/45 on 17"x7.5" rims. I'm wondering if maybe the offset is wrong. Has anyone else experienced this? MRT and Mullins both say I have a genuine case, as it's dangerous to have the tyres rubbing obviously. Somehow I get the feeling Bob Janes are going to blame Mullins for saying the wheels fit a Magna or blame the suspension. I think this is going to get messy. I hate complaining about stuff, but I don't want to be shredding 270 dollar tyres either! Hopefully I won't have to fork out any more money here. MRT said the problem may be able to be fixed with some spacers as a last resort but I'm not sure about the legality of this. Does anyone know?

Thoughts?

I had 19X8" 245/35 on my car
When I took them off the tyre was all marked from the control arm! I didn't even know

This info probably won't help you but i don't understand how a 17x7.5" 235 can cause an issue.

My guess is the offset could be wrong.

Definitely take it up with bob jane. Its their responsibilty.

Stay calm, go to BJ and tell them whats happened so far, if they say its mullins fault them ask them to contact the them right then and there while you wait. If they say they cant or they are too busy then ask them if they take responsibility if you have an accident on the way home because a tyre blows and they couldnt be bothered helping you. (long sentance, sorry):D

Stand firm, be polite and dont take ****, like your dealing with a gobby AB:D

Yeah pretty much what I've done. I got the feeling from the guy on the phone at Bob Jane that they wanted to blame Mullins, but he said to bring it in tomorrow and take it up with the boss. Hopefully they will come to the party. In the end, they sold me the product. If there's a problem with their supplier, they need to take it up IMO.

Wish me luck!

If you check around the rest of the forums you will find that the tyres are too big for the rims. You should have 17x8" rims for 235 tyres.

Get Bob Janes to show you the Tyre Industry guide.

Also I suspect that the offset is wrong.
How much gap between the closest point of the rim and the suspension.
You should be easily able to get a finger clearance.

You can run 235/45/17 on a 7.5" rim, you could run 245/45/17(I do for track) if u wanted. It's the 7" rims that u can't...

If it's rubbing on the upper control arm then you need a different offset to bring the wheels out and give u more clearance.
