When i stomp the foot in the magna when its in 3rd or 4th there is a moment of calm for about 2 seconds then it drops a cog and i get all my power in one lump sum. This continues for as long as is needed and then once the speed limit is reached i back off the throttle and then i am engulfed in the smell of burning oil.
This isnt normal right?

No it probably isnt. My car takes no more then 1 second 2 drop gears to accelarate. Also the oil smell doesnt sound good. This is EFI thou, is ur's and EFI or Carby??? it COULD make a difference.

No mine is EFI. Discovered that there is a nasty oil leak down the bottom of the engine. I bet thats the smell :P

With the lag, check your TPS for adjustment, just as a little tip set it to 0.65V with throttle closed, instead of the recommended 0.5V always made my autos kickback heaps quicker :)

Well it seems irrelevant now. She is dying.
The auto is playing up, there is an odd tappety noise constantly, the oil light keeps coming on, She is blowing smoke on start-up and under load. All this in one night. Also i randomly lose throttle response at higher speeds and the car still leaks and stinks of burning oil.
This combined with the busted shock, 3 warped rotors, psycho electrics, etc...

Its decision time, i can either sell the pair of cars (this one and the parts car) and drive one of my dads ols s*t heaps. Or i can continue to pour money into the magna. I love my magna but the amount of cash to get it fixed is just phenomenal. The car is worth like $500. So it seems i will be driving a ratty old VP ute very soon, which isnt in much better condition than the magna.

Hi Monk,
can't you just keep it going like buffy said untill you can get another car off ebay, or there was someone here wanting to get rid of their first gen for $50. I don't know where it was or where you are though. Driving an old ute for a while though would mean saving enough to get yourself an EFI manual as I gather yours is a nice car except for the motor.

Now you have 2 decide wat next, wether top get another 1st Gen (yep!) or look elsewhere.

Taking it easy wont help it now. My mechanic reckons its "done a ring" which i have no idea of what that is. One of my mates asked if i was running it on diesel and another described it as "like driving behind a steam engine"

Well if it's blowing blue smoke constantly you probably have stuffed rings. A compression test will tell you.
If you want to fix the TP, buy a ****ter with a good engine and do a swap (cheap).

The TP needs more work than just an engine but i found a couple of cheap elantes on ebay, that means i could get the kit to
