Hey all am thinking of replacing my air flow meter to see if it fixes my shuddering problem in my 92 TR. However am unsure if the part number has to be the same as the one in my car already. Also how long would it take a mechanic to exchange parts and how much money am I looking at here. Thanks :D

Hi Kristine

I wouldn't just replace the AFM just yet - better to post for help from another AMC member in the same area who is willing to temporarily change/over the AFM - only takes a few minutes to swap the whole assembly.

If the mechanic has driven the car and feels that it is not mechanical, but looking at sensors, has he checked the Distributor wiring connector?

I've heard these can give unusual symptoms due to vibration on the wires/plug, and water may have affected the electronic board inside the Dist.

Cheers, Barry

I've already had it to the mechanics and replaced all the usual stuff like the plugs, leads, distributor cap and oxy sensor. Still don't know why the car is shuddering like it is. So am going to do the AFM as a last resort. Have found one from Tamworth for $75 so have decided to replace it anyway, hoping that the AFM could be the problem.

Yes, I noticed your list included Dist. cap, rotor etc, but not the plug/wiring, which is a common fault.

Hope all goes well, keep us posted

if the shuddering is only at idle it might be the engine mounts, i have a slight shudder from the engine mount closest to the cabin as its slightly damaged and i cant afford to replace it and its a ***** to get to. I say check the AFM from another member and then check the dist plug and wires then engine mounts, its the easiest order.

Thanks, will check wires, plugs etc after I get the AFM in :D Don't think it's the engine mounts as it tends to shudder under load. However will keep you posted

it might be the harmonic balancer, it happened to be this when my car struggled,it strugged particularly on hot days and underload

Thanks magnus :) Definately not the engine mounts, both are in pretty good nick, no cracks or splits.

before you start replacing the exy parts i would be doing a good tune up

and a carbon blast

sorry whats the cost on getting all that done at the same time? and where are you getting it done? i need to get mine done as well, just havent done a lot of research yet. the mounts themselves are bloody expensive arent they? do you have current prices?

sorry but what's a carbon blast? And what kind of things need to be done for a decent tune up?

start with spark plugs

check the air filter

change the fuel filter

adjust the timing

clean out the throttle body

do a carbon blast (its a cleaning fluid that you run through the motor that removes build up on injectors valves pistons ect)

reset the base idle

Thanks magnus, pretty sure all that was done when my car was last in the mechanics. Not sure about the base idle though. Will have to check up on it
