Went to start my car yesterday and nothing. The engine ticked over and sort of seemed to fire but no ignition.
Called the RAA out, he had a good look and did his fault finding etc, we came to the conclusion that the factory immobiliser is not disengaging when it should.

I need to take the car to a Mitsubishi dealer and get them to look at the coding on the keys and or computer.
Its a 1996 TE Sedan, all standard

Is this the right move and does it sound expensive??

Unlikely to be immobiliser - it will stop the engine from cranking over when activated. To check, leave igntion on for 30 minutes before cranking. Try replacing the ignition coil. Had the same problem on a TS with the immobiliser and coil.

Not necessarily.

I've had issues with the immobiliser on my TJ for a while, with the engine stalling immediately after it was started, and sometimes the engine would just crank, but not fire.
It turned out to be a dodgy connection between the immobiliser control unit and the ECU - see this thread ( http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9208&page=6) for more details.

Martin.
