I would like to replace the crappy OEM speakers that are mounted in the dash with quality after market speakers for my TS. The problem I have and perhaps others may have encountered is the fact that the OEM speakers are very shallow at only 30mm! Most after markets are more like 50mm to 70mm in depth. I don't want to make a hole in the space below because it is almost impossible to do unless I rip the dash apart and the fact that the air vent is located in the space so I don't want to interrupt the airflow to the dash vents. The only solution that I have is to mount the new speakers so they stick out of the dash and the speaker mesh, whack on another speaker mesh above the actual speaker which I think would look like a dog's breakfast. I really don't want to mount the speakers in the door because of the hassle of cutting holes, removing trim etc. If any one has done what I would like to achieve or know where I can pick up shallow speakers, I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks.

hmmmm, im pretty sure kenwood make some shallow 4" speakers, but try straithfeild, autobarn, hi-fi supermarket, and JB HI-FI and they are sure to have something there.
WORD OF ADVICE.
i know you cant be bothered ripping up your door trims BUT
time to take off trims, measure up hole, cut, and put back on - 30 minutes+/- a trim
time to re route speaker wire from dash speakers into door - 30+/- a trim
sound of new 6" speakers - Priceless:D
for the hassle your going to, its really worth the extra few hours to mount them in the door, i did, took me ages, and i was sweating like a mofo, but its really worth the extra hassle.
so just keep that in mind, that re routing the wire through the door would be the better idea, if you need any help dont hesistate to ask me.

What about putting just a tweeter there?
if you get some 4" splits you might be able to mount the woofer(lol) up under the dash somewhere and then just put the tweeter up the top.

mate said that if you get a curved stanley knife, you might be able to get all that plastic off behind the shallow speaker.. but the 6" idea is still better.. thats what i did too

Hey mate,
i've got Jenson 4inch speakers in my dash that were going to go with my car but if you wanna swap them over for factory speakers plus $10 changeover. Yes grab a stanley knife and cut the small plastic strip that goes accross the hole, i've done it and it works fine :).
Let me know ASAP as my cars going this saturday :).
