I'm moving house and was wondering wat would probably be the maximum the TR can take? I have a 2.6l manual TR 93. I was thinking of the 10 x 6 Furniture Van but it looks massive and considering my stock TR onli has 80 odd KW of power, that might seem abit too big. Oh yeah. and it will fully loaded with furniture. Should I probably go for a smaller one and make more trips?

take the smaller one. maybe a 6x4 would be much more appropriate. the magna can only tow 750 kg or so unbraked. so make more trips.

at least if you had an auto you could tow more.

an auto towing more how do you figure that. the auto tranny would overheat long before the manual box would give out. how come tow trucks are manual not auto?

I think the legal capacity for unbraked trailer is 500kg.

Most tow trucks i have seen are manually shifted autos, the torque converter makes it easier to get off the line when towing, most car manufactuers rate autos with a higher towing capacity, but not like car manufactueres would know anything hey?

:stoopid: It's due to the torque converter. The auto 2nd gens also have a tranny cooler(I'm 90% sure of this) so they prolly wouldn't heat up that much more

Yeah.. I'm taking the 6x4 i think. Its a Medium sized one. doesnt look too massive so i guess it should be fine. Hopefully nothing happens to my poor car. lol.

Just don't hammer it at the lights etc. Take it easy. I remember I had a auto 1987 Nissan
Pintara TwinSpark (wedge shaped one) which I used to tow a 6x4 trailer full of wet clay to
the dumps. It won't move till the revs were about 2000rpm.

also remember with front wheel drives, no more than 60 kilos downforce on the towbar.

I don't think its an issue with FWDs. Its a limitation on the tow bars. My 1600kg rated tow
bar has, I think, a 150kg downforce limit. Any car will handle like crap if its front is raised
too much due to lack of steering control.

You shouldnt have any problem with the big trailer ya car can handle it i sure. i regularly tow a 1.5t boat (bout dozen times a year) in mr 2.6 tr man. lil slow at takin off but once she gets up to speed she puurs reasonably effortlessly (for a 4 ne way) only trouble i have is when it come to a hill, have to throw her into 3rd to stay at 100km/h

No matter what trailer you go for though just remember to distribute all your weight on above the tires or the trailer while be all over the road

I agree with Mirlin every single word from personal experience. As long as you do that you are fine. No more said :)

i've towed 1300kg in my auto 2L astron sigma wagon without too many probs. the brakes is what i'd worry about.. if they're not that great at the moment i wouldn't be pulling heavy loads. and i agree with whats been said about auto trans. mind you the autobox in the sigma's are usually borgwarner 35s which were used in falcons etc..
yeah, just stick to the rated maximum for your car -if you want to take a chance and go over the max you'll have to baby it -and hopefully you don't have far to go. keep large hills along the journey in mind as you pack the trailer as well (you don't wanna be doing many hill starts if you're towing a tonne.)
