Quite a few people have installed the Redback cat-back exhaust as seen on eBay.. never heard a bad thing said about it.

Yeah - I'm happy as a pig in **** with my redback system, but if you are after something that is loud enough to turn heads down at your local thursday night boy-racer hangout - you will be a bit disappointed.
What you have been told about them being pretty quite at idle and low load is correct! I'm pretty damn happy with the sound it makes when I give it a kick in the guts, and all comments I've had are positive.

Yup, got mine on the 3L manual (full cat-back), wouldn't trade it for any fart cannon ever. Whereas the cannons are just loud, the Redbacks do nothing but 'grumble'..... that low pitched rumble...
It turns heads like you wouldn't believe... you have this Magna drive past and as you back off it does that deep, throaty rumble. Everyone turns and looks, then start scratching their heads thinging "WTF has he done to that Magna??" - it totally confuses them :bowrofl:
Lets just say that nobody actually challenges me to race anymore. A number of Commy drivers really love the sound, can't believe that it is basically a 'standard' 3L V6. I only have the K&N Panel filter installed and a EZBoy ported throttle body. Barry's fuel kit will be next.
I found that the 'flat spot' like many of us have experienced was improved by the Redback, but the Ported TB addition is when it all can into it's own. Engine seems to not labour as hard either, and it is even more rev happy than before.
Driving experiences with the Redback:
Very quiet at engine idle speeds (say to 1400rpm). You can hear a tiny grumble, that's all.
When you open it up, it sort of grumbles and holds a nice deep note, bit nothing crazy.
Driving at normal speeds and acceleration, it is basically as quiet as the stock 'normal' (not sports/VRX) muffler, only a deeper note/pitch and it sounds alot fuller, not as tinny or farty.
I find there is a slight drone to it at about 2000rpm, but that does not affect me at cruising speeds - I have the sound system to drown that out! I am hoping that Barry's fuel kit will cure me of the drone as it has helped a number of other members get rid of theirs. I'm also hoping the tone will further deepen once that fuel kit gets a few kms under it's belt.
Under load (medium acelleration in 2nd or 3rd gear up to a smidge over 3000rpm) it sounds better still, a bit louder than normal. Shifting down and just letting it go on the overrun is really nice too, with no crackle but a great warbly tone.
When you really open it up and the tacho needle swings past the 3500rpm mark, the system just opens up and starts screaming. But 4000rpm it is really on song, it truly is a sound to behold when you get to those revs in 3rd gear! A really purposeful note emanates from your tailpipe, and people's heads snap around to have a look as if you just went "Pssssssscht"!! It sounds a good 1-2 secs quicker even if it doesn't go that much quicker.
Best thing is that I can come home at 3am in the morning and not wake the whole neighbourhood doing so. The kid next door with his Pulsar with a great big cannon with a 4" tip couldn't come home at idle without waking everybody within a half-block radius.
Great when you get pulled for a producer by PC Plod. Coz it is really tough sounding but quiet at idle, the coppers basically plead with me to know where I got my exhaust from coz it sounds good an it's quiet! I tell them, they are shocked. One local copper here reckons he will buy one and get the resonator and back box cut and shut into his VZ commodore......
For the money I paid for it including fitting, I cannot recommend them enough. I just want extractors now so I can raise the sound level just a bit, sometimes it can be too quiet.

i'm thinking of getting a redback system for my TJ 3.5L. Not sure whether to get the cat-back or just replace the standard muffler?
What size is the standard exhaust on a TJII 3.5L?

If you want an exhaust note with presence, install crazy camshafts like I did lol you just can't shut this car up. You get some odd looks pulling up to a set of lights with a lumpy idle.. in a magna ;) this (http://www.wermspowke.net/files/idle.wav) was recorded on my mobile phone.. it's not renowned for it's recording qualities and seems to have omitted most of the audible range, but you get the idea.

The Redback systems that are always sold on eBay (pretty sure always same user) are these legit? Anyone bought one this way?
If you dunno what I'm talking about, search ebay for "Mitsubishi Magna & Verada Sports Exhaust System"
Just wanna know if I can buy it this way or is it easier to go to a zorst shop and have them supply/fit.

Apparently you need to cut and rejoin some of the pipe before the flange that bolts up to the cat when fitting to 3.5L cars.
Otherwise there's nothing wrong with the eBay system. I think even Bain bought one from eBay. I might be making that up though.. best to check with him.

They certainly are legit (pretty hard to get a seller rating that high being a scammer), as thats who I purchased mine from.
Having said that - it might pay to ring some local exhaust fitters first and enquire, as I had a few people basically tell me they were gonna overcharge me for labour of an install because they weren't making any margin on the sale of the exhaust system.

I get the impression they might, because when I ordered mine off the ebay dude he sent me an email asking if my car was a sedan or wagon. Maybe email him asking - ebay ID is onlineperformanceauto or something very similar

Wasn't the case with mine, I'm led to believe there is more than one design of the redback systems.

i think mine is 2.5" in to a redback and even on idle it dosnt sound stock but the noise isnot louad either. its just right and ppl do notice when idleing but not much of an attention drawer unless i give her sum gas or ease of the accelerato she makes a nice burble and damn its sounds awsome :D

Cost was $330 for online performance and i fitted it myself, it's VERY easy

the guy from ebay is an honest fella.... plenty of ppl on this forums bought from this guy...
regarding the redback and how it sounds... maybe abit too quite..... i usually alternate between the two magnas... the other magna has a lukey.. which is much louder than the redback.....
we had to remove the hotdog bit on the redback cos it kept scrapping when entering the garage.. so took it to the exhaust shop and got it chopped off... and replaced with a straight through pipe.. sound is still the same.. maybe it has gone abit louder...
all in all its a good system.... give the boot and it does growl...
best of all it doesnt drone!!!
