I HAVE that current panasonic model, and, WOW. 5v pre-outs (sub, front and rear). The sound quality is amazing and the features are amazing for the price!
You cant beat the value :).
Had the head unit for about 9 months now, havn't had any issues with it.

hmmmmm tough choice. Both look great and have good features.
IIRC though the Pioneer is quite a bit more expensive?
I think you would have no trouble finding that Panasonic deck for less than $400....not sure about the Pioneer :)

Hmmm i'm not sure, either way the 8400 was RRP $725, still a bargain and with identical features (just slightly different front design).

Personally i think pioneer have gone down hill lately and shouldnt be mentioned in the same breath as Alpine or Fujitsu 10 anymore.
I had a Panasonic CQ1300W in my last car and it was a good unit, quality was the same as its competitors, except it was $100 cheaper and had a remote (the others didnt). So if you are looking for a budget headunit, id give that panasonic one your looking at a go.

Pioneer have never really Been on the same playing Field as Alpine or Eclipse..
Pioneer make Great gear but all Manufacturers have a weakness..

For the record, I have just insatlled a Panasonic CQ-C5401 into a mates car, and it has got to be the worst deck that i have ever worked on. Internal amp is shocking to say the least, thank goodness it had pre-outs, so i grabbed one of my olds amps and wacked that in there and it was a bit better. I had heaps of wiring probs, unit keeps shutting itself off at random. If it keeps it up, i've informed him to take it back under warranty, as there is no way it should sound and operate like this

I have had both, Panasonic for 2 years and Pioneer for 3 years. I would go the Pioneer just because I am used to there decks and I have an RCA input adapter via stacker that allows me connect almost anything.
Both deck's internal amps are crap, there is no way you could tell them apart. Both of my unit have never missed a beat and both have been pushed hard :D
I would rate Pioneer against alpine for sure for $$$ to $$$. I actually found the Apline models that are under $800 hard to tune and lacking compared to say the 5750mp and above. Over $1k it is a different story when the alpines time alignment features come in handy. Never used or played with eclipse.

Thanks for everyone's input...
i am going to be hated by alot and loved by a few now..
i got the panasonic deck..
was installed on saturday.. :) omg i can practically do it blindfolded now :P
anyway..
i have put it through its paces and it has performed way better than i expected...
i'm gonna have to upgrade my splits 4 sure!
i had it pumping hard and it was great.. :)
not sure what everyone means by the internal amp is crap? sounds great and i can power my splits straight fromt the deck..
there is some absolute ear splitting treble coming out of my current splits at high volume :)
owww....
anyway now i am gonna have to go and sound deadin the car....
