its been done. if u search it ull find it. most ppl for the instrument cluster had not much luck coz its not bright enough. i went to autobarn and bought LED wedge type and the light from that sucked balls big time so i got my self sum reverse glow gauges and its way better the LEDs

I have blue leds in my dash cluster and have no probs with brightness, they cost me $5 a piece though.
Its easy as to put them in too, unscrew the surround and pull out, remove the plugs and pull out, then unscrew the four screws holding the cluster and pull out, take out the four big lights in the back of cluster and replace with leds, and remember when putting them back in that they only work ONE way, so a little trial and error if you forgot which way you pulled them out in.
They look unreal and I have had many people comment on how nice they are.
As for legalities I cant see why they would be a problem, you still see everything just in a brighter different colour.

What type/size/brightness/colour etc? Usually you need resistors in line with LED's or they burn out very quickly... Did you keep the screw part that is in the cluster aswell? You just yank out the bulb? Or did you do some custom wiring to get them in there?

Cant remember the type, I kept the screw part as the led plugs straight into them, there still going strong after two years. NO custom wiring, a direct replacement for the bulb.
I did have the packet until two weeks ago when cleaned out shed, they had japanese writing all over them, bout all I can remember now. soz.

You can get 12V LEDs ,the resitor is doped into the LED at manufacture (no you can't smoke them:nuts:) and various intensities.

i bought some 10mm 12 volt blue led wegdes off of ebay, they work a treat. They dont operate any different from usual, still dim the same, just blue. Do a serach for 10mm led wedge or something.

i've got red LEDs in my dash.... if u are going the way of LEDs just make sure it's at least 3W (5W is what i got) not those poxy 0.5W ones auto stores usually have in stock.

The blues dont look bright enough IMO, I have tried just last month, didnt like it. If you want that look go for the reverse gauges.

Well that all depends on what type of LED you got. There are high brightness ones and there are normal ones. Make sure you look at the LUMI rating of them.... The higher the brighter...
Anyone know where to get blue needles from? :) I hate those orange ones magna's come with...

thanks 4 the pics guys :D
i ended up putting Philips Bluevision or something globes into my cluster. it doesn't really change the color, but makes it a lot brighter... a nice difference for night driving.

you can't...
problem is Led's tend to be very focused whereas normal lights spread there light 360Deg.. (LED is more like 120Deg...)
i have the same problem with mine...

you dont need to know how to do this as is a simple put on the sleeve on the bulb.
However pics on the RED effect results would be nice.
If you want to know how to open the instrument cluster, there is a thread that shows you how to do it, let me know if you need to know how and I post the url. Try search "Changing 'D' light" and there should be a write up by me

Sorry stupid me, i thought he was talking about placing plastic inside the cluster to refract light better through it, not placing a coloured piece of plastic over a bulb.
