Hey all, my dad is having probs with his '95 Verada. It's come up with the error code 31, which I have been told is the knock sensor. Can anyone tell me what it actually does in layman's terms and how much it will cost to fix it? Thanks

knock sensor
it retards the timing if the motor is pinging
if motor is pinging it can cause the light to come up
check timing first
1 way to test it is to hook up a timing light look at the timing marks and tap the engine block with a hammerm the timing should retard

hmmmm
pinging is when the piston is trying to compress a explosion
normaly it is heard when accelerating hard up a hill the motor gets a crackle sort of sounds metalic ...

what's pinging?
Pinging is commonly occurs when the timing is out (there are other causes but I'll leave them out). What happens is that the car is trying to fire the cylinder at the wrong time, causing pre-detonation and a horrible sound.

Being a verada it is a v6, it is located under the inlet manifold, you will see a wire coming up from the valley. (this is the area between the heads)
To remove is a bit fiddly, best to take on manifolds. I do nto think you can get to it otherwise.
Don't het your engine block with a hammer, 1 it does not work and 2, Magnus hits everything with a hammer. Next he will tell you it is illegal to change your own oil. :bowrofl:
Go to a self serv wrecker, from memory they are the same as the second gen 4 cyl sensor, get one, plug it in, if the error is satisfied you can then determine that is the problem without removing everything if it turns out to be something else.
It could be something simple like a dirty plug in the harness, check this first.

lol have you tryed taping the block with a hammer ??? last time i tryed it the timing moved as a ping (knock) sends a shock through the block tapping a hammer is enough to quick test it...
i would be checking the timing first then start testing things

Funny mate that in over 20 years working in cars I have never tried that:nuts: , only on the second gen v6 it generally will not work due to the location.
I would expect in your 7 years you would have a fix for everything.
Back on topic, as I said, check the connection, you are doubtful to get a result from hitting the block as the knock sensor is mounted in the valley on a seperate part.
Pity you are not in SA< could test this for you in a few minutes :D

my job was to diagnose cars from a vw kombi to a very late bmw ..using some of the best testing tools around...
that place is now training other workshops and even mechanics from dealerships
the workshop controler rang me the other day and said they would have me back whenever i wanted my old job back,,,,
im sure you know a think or 2 about magnas and other makes...

Cool mate, so the bosch certificates that I have for various systems also mean nothing, I used to work in a dealership which sold and serviced, Porsche, Volvo, Mercedes, Rolls Royce and Subaru. Make up your own mind

To kristine
I suggest that you go to your local sprints, repco, supercheap etc and buy a workshop manual for your car or alternatively there is a downloadable copy that's floating about here somewhere. If you want a copy pm me and I can pm/email it to you. It's 44MB

Hey guys, thanks for all your replies, my dad's car is finally fixed. Turned out it wasn't the knock sensor after all. It happened to be the distributor cap, which was the first thing I told him to check! So $450 dollars later the car is all fixed LOL
