Short question: Would it be a ridiculous idea to run 2 different sized subs, say one 12" and one 15"?

Pointless but not ridiculous..

Subs of Different Sizes would drown each other out..

Go for Two of the Same Size..
Or Just run the Largeer of the Two for Bigger Bass..

On the same subject...

What about 2 12" different models though?

Its Generally Agreed that Running two Different Spec Subs is a Bad Idea..
Each Sub requires Exact Tuning and Correct Powering to Sound Correctly and not risk the Voice Coils Blowing out..

If They were Say Same Brand, Same Spec Different Year Models then it is OK..

I was actually thinking about something like this. My idea was to keep my 2 10"s and have one 15".

10's can be for the nice punchy beats and the 15 can be for the deep bassy tunes.

They wouldn't drown each other out, but you would get 2 different sounding subs.
You would hear punchyness and big laggy booms. Which could sound quite good if you listen to alot of rnb. I had mixed brands of 12" in my last setup, went quite well. I had to replace them though when one of the subs starting desorting really bad.

yeaa.. like everyone says theyd be 'punchin' at different times.. off by a few miliseconds..

unless your goin for a pro setup, i wouldn worry.. If you jus want some bass, try it out, see how you like it. As long as you get good clear low frequencies and not muddyness.. then its all good :D

I had a mate who had both a 15" and 12" and just changed the sub's depending on which music he listened 2. The 15" for RnB and 12" for Techno, House. Its a simple as keeping both in the boot, and swaping the wiring over. Thout bout that??

I run 2 x 9" subs and 2 x 12" subs....

But two different sized subs in the boot is unlikely to achieve anything more than 1 or two of the same could do...

the only way i could see it working is something along the lines of what stimulate has got running. there would have to be at least 4-5" difference in speaker diameter (say, a 10 + 15, or 8's and 12's)

at least then you would be able to tune them enough for them to do their job properly, otherwise, yes they will just be out of time and mostly pointless

I thought it'd be very difficult to tune the 12 and 15 to play well together, was wishing I'd be proved wrong but I guess not. Might see if I can get a 10" ...

You make it sound so easy and basic.... The 9's are more like super woofers when compared to the Hz response of the 12inchers.

Gemini: Two 10's and a 15 could be done, just mount the 10's in the front doors  Better still, sell the 10's and get a 15inch, save a lot of problems!

It is more to do with how you run different size speakers, im sure tim will still have his 9's high passed and his sub(s) will be low passed and probably run a sub sonic filter as well so there is little cancellation creating that "balanced" effect. :D Size isn't everything if you run the right filter :bowrofl:
