  was driving my 9 year old TE magna today to box hill (ironically to my mechanic to get a few bits and pieces) when my speedo & tacho started to go nuts (up and down, up and down), then the car became very erratic and jerky. i was shi**thing myself because i was sitting in the middle of the road near a set of traffic lights. All this happened about 1km from my mechanic on cambridge street in box hill. so what did i do? continue to drive and arrived at my mechanic who then proceed to attemp to start the car. he said "the cylinder heads are gone!". i was in shock!!!! "that'll at least be 2 grand", he said.  he still isnt sure the exact costs because he needs to look at it more closely. so i ask, who has had a similar experience? how much approx to fix? would a recon'd engine be the way to go?

Dunno, strange one that. I'm surprised it ran without any compression, ports to guide the intake and exhaust and cams to control the valves (which must also be missing). On the bright side it won't matter if the timing belt snaps.
Gee, well, you might as well look at swapping the engine. Stick a 3.5 in instead. You'll love the added torque.

I think he meant "gone" as in damaged, not "vanished".

you know, I think he did too :P but it still doesn't make sense. Damaged how? Why's it going to cost $2000 to fix?

And? Engines come with them and wiring. No big deal
Actually, someone here has a 3.5 using a 3.0l ECU and piggyback at the same time as an auto to manual conversion.
