Anyone have BMC panel or pod style filters installed in their rides? I'd be interested to find out the difference between the K&N ones and the BMC ones.

Hey
I have the BMC panel filter in my Ralliart. Have noticed a little difference but importantly have not suffered from the "flat spot" that some others have reported. Be careful though, if u get the BMC, get the part number off their website for your car (especially dont trust Autobarn to get the number). Also, be prepared for it to be be quite expensive, much more than a KnN.
Cheers

I heard it was about the $220 mark. Was also told there was a guy up in Albury who works at Autobarn who has a modified Magna - was told to give them a call for advice on modding the car.

according to the BMC website, the flat panel filter for the TH 3.0 to TJ 3.5 is US$113.20 (AUD$154.62)
maybe it would be better to order online from overseas to get a cheaper price?

That sounds like a really good price - i might do a bit of research first as to my first mod.

so is BMC better than K&N

Mine was about $170 but only because Autobarn got it so bloody wrong n i jumped up and down. Standard price is about $220.
Who knows which filter is better? Even dyno runs couldnt say for sure that one filter or the other was better, unless there are massive differences in power output with only a filter change (Unlikely).
I got the BMC for something different.
Cheers,

i run a DRIFT 4.5" pod, and it seems to pick up better up top, with good noise from about 4500 to 6000

Science, does your pod sit exposed or is it enclosed into some kind of housing (e.g. custom or cut into the factory one).
Was thinking I'd get a pod instead but was worried about being dicked by police if pulled over.

Yeh Pod filters i know in NSW atleast arent legal unless they are enclosed which somehow stores seem to neglect telling people.....:doubt:

Pod with a heat shield is the way to go.
Nothing beats it in the sound department.
Love that air sucking noise

i spoke to a friend of mine in Burson's today and he had no idea they (pods) were illegal (exposed) when i told him that the guys at Autobarn said an exposed air filter was against regulations.

Would be interested to know what would involved in using the standard panel filter surround to house a K&N pod.

Im actually doint this at the moment...
Making the standard air box bigger to fit the K&N oval pod in it. i'll post pics when its finished

Wow that looks heaps nice.
Would that fit on a 3.0 Verada engine?
What is that called and where did you buy that?

Called a K&N POD Filter - with MAF sensor plug? < not sure about the MAF bit will check reciept when I get home.
I got it done at RPW in Perth.
Awesome place for Magna mods, this one is on my 3.5L but im sure you could do some mods and make it fit ( or let them fit it )
All I need now is CAI and to sheild my POD from the engine heat.
:D
its the 'magna' oval pod filter, its sposed to be designed so you don't get any air sensor troubles, anyone with a 2nd or 3rd gen is sposed to either get that or a panel. pod flows better of course. Ask the new dude who runs phillcom about a price and compare to RPW and your local autobarn/whatever and see who has the best price.

The answer to all your questions are in his post
RPW (perth)
Got mine from there aswell but it deffinately suffers with heat which is why im making the box

im still iffy on the whole POD VS panel debate here, i got the K&N panel running with a 80mm CAI and well it goes beutifully, from what i have gathered is that if the POD is not encased and not reciveing cold air its pretty pointless besides the sound.
so yeah for $200 i dunno seems like a few pennies to give away just for some sound, also wont the box cancel out most of the sound the pod makes? so then it would be identical to a panel?
hmmmmm.......ive read the whole thread and settled with the panel. If someone shows me they increase HP show me and ill get one!

True True.. I didnt get the POD for the sound however, RPW advised me and I think it was all they had at the time.

No the Pod has a larger surface area

ah ok, not gonna argue with that, just getting air to every piece of the filter seemed like a challange to me, where as a panel, all the air is going through it, but then again these sound wayyyyy better and if i ever had some spare $$$ and time i would probably do it:)
Hoots
25-03-2006, 09:25 PM
well if you had a CAI system for the pod you would get more air thru it from behind the front spoiler
Yeah a POD has draw from the entire surface like if you imagine a ball on a stick sucking in air, where as a panel only draws from one spot so your panel may as well be as big as the cai pipe you're running because that's all its drawing, enclosed pod is very similar however technically it may draw more air through the cai, but the panel would too, but not enclosed the pod will out flow no worries, just make a cai the same diameter of your panel! killer!

look at the pic
what one has more surface area ?
if you were to pull apart the pod and lay it flat

Tehehe this thread is just getting funny!
POD, Panel...
They are both better than stock!

To put this simply DO NOT get a pod unless you are going to have it in a sealed enclosure with an intake snorkel(like the stock airbox) or a CAI so as to use air that is not from the engine bay. If you leave a pod filter unenclosed in the engine bay it will be a waste of money as it will be sucking in the hot air from the engine bay. There is plenty of evidence(yes proper stuff like dyno runs on the same day and dyno) documenting that running an exposed pod in an engine bay may actually lower your power. If you are not thinking of enclosing the pod then don't waste your money buying one, buy a high flow panel filter instead.
When choosing what type of filter I would advise getting an oiled cotton one(ie K&N) as these will filter out more particles and can be cleaned, whereas the foam ones can't and won't filter the air as much.
But as Alpha said, either one of these options will be better than stock :)

lol I seriously only make like $60 for 5hrs work plus R&D time etc etc. Used to be ok when I had spare time and didn't mind the tinkering but since my 2nd arrival (she's 9wks old now) I haven't had a second to scratch! Now I've got another business in at council I have even less time to do the things that I really enjoy doing.
I still have the template if someone is interesting in taking up where I left off. PM for details etc.
