Got a 3.5L 2002 TJ auto with 94K on the odo. My alternator is playing up and I need to get it replaced. I have a bit of extra cash atm and I thought I'd do the 100k service at the same time plus whatever else needs fixing. I'm not very mechanically minded but I've been reading these forums and getting some ideas (maybe a few too many ideas, lol). Here's a list of things I came up with so far:

1. new alternator
2. timing belt kit (with new auto-tensioner and tensioner pulley)
3. cam seals
4. water pump?
5. check for cracked hoses, worn belts, etc while doing the above
6. 6 new platinum plugs + new wires
7. fuel injectors (clean or replace?)
8. change air/oil/fuel filters, top all fluids
9. replace pads if needed

Now for a few questions:

Q1. With the water pump, is it worth replacing even if there's nothing wrong with it while doing the timing belt?

Q2. Is it worth replacing the fuel injectors or is a clean enough? How much extra would it cost for replacements?

Q3. What else is worth doing at the same time? What am I missing? Trany service?

Q4. How much should I expect to pay for all this? Think it's possible for $1K?

In reply to ur questions...

If u dont want to change the water pump now with the timing belt, if i fails it will involve having the whole process done again as to get to the water pump they need to remove timing case and belt, etc, so for the money u save on labour, do it as well.

When i do my timing belts, i change all the coolant, gear and engine oils, sparkies, leads, etc... do it once and forget about it... IN one hit..

but its up to u!

No need to have 6 platinum plugs - just the rear bank is fine - (save yourself $60).

Water pump only needs to be replaced if there is a problem with it - they can pull it out and have a look fairly easily.

Mitsi can do a fuel injector 'clean'. They basically disconnect the fuel rail and run some sort of cleaner through it and the injectors. No idea if this makes any difference at all and it cost's about $160. The only way of telling if this helps is to get a spray pattern check before and after which mitsi's definately aren't setup to do. You'll need an EFI specialist for this.

The injectors definately don't need replacing as a 'service' item - only if something is wrong with one (unlikely at the age of the car).

The rest is fine to get done.

Bit the bullet and got most of that done. Price hurt quite a bit though. Tell me if this sounds ok:

$490 for timing belt and cam seals
$220 for reconditioned alternator
$130 for high tension leads
$105 for rear break pads
$350 for full service including 3x rear platinum plugs, 3x regular front plugs, oil/fuel/air filter plus everything else that goes with a major service.

Total: $1295

$490 for belt and seals!!! Holy crap! my timing belt only cost $90 so they must be some heavy duty kick ass seals for $400!!

Sounds about right for Genuine mitsubishi parts and labour.

If you used aftermarket parts - you could have reduced this bill quite considerably, but i too like to use genuine parts.

well you will probably find that you can get better quality products for less money if you don't use mitsubishi genuine parts. Mitsi parts are a ripp-off, trust me and save money for parts and mod your car hehe
