Hey guys
Here's the thing.
When i fill up, i normally fill up the whole tank of the VRX. I just bought the car about 4 weeks ago.
Here's all the fill ups i've made. All of them were full tanks and trip computer was reset everytime i filled up.
1st time - Optimax - 480 to empty - Got about 465km
2nd time - Optimax - 480km to empty - Got about 465km
3rd time - shell Regular unleaded - 480 to empty - Got about 410km - Avg fuel accroding to trip - 16L/100km
4th time - shell Regular unleaded - 420 to empty - Got about 380km - 17L/100km
5th time/today- shell premium 95- 390 to emtpy
I don't think the car has knock sensors or anything.
My guess is that it takes the previous average of how you drove and than calculates it.
Has anyone experienced this before?
What do you think?
Cheers

16 is high.. i do stop start all day long and get 11-14L per 100 and get 500-600kms every time..

Thats a bit high. What sort of driving do you do???

i dont have a fuel trip meter or wateva just a lil push button odometer and a fuel gauge
but if i drive nicely i usually get 600kms to a tank, thats in my 3L auto
the funny thing is how inaccurate my fuel gauge is ive drawn a diagram to help explain.

My start and stop are bit more than you i think. takes this.
My work is about 500m from my house. There are 2 traffic lights and a railway crossing. It actually takes me 5mins to drive 500m. Need the car for work.
From home to uni. 10km. - 6 speed bumps. not kidding 6speed bumbs because of school/hospital. All those speed bumps are on a 1km stretch before i get on dandenong road. Then on tha way to uni. 5 taffic lights stopping at min of 3 every day. I swear.
I also tend to rev up to 4000-4500rpms. Its manul.
I'm not complaing about fuel economy. I know i can achieve better if i drive safely and slowly. My trips are not more than 10kms. I drove highway just because i had to drop off a couple of friends. Otherwise longest trip for me in a normal week is about 10kms
But if you have any suggestions of how to achive better fuel economy in my case PLEASE tell me. My car has been given a full service 2000kms ago. New air filter, 6 spark plugs all platinum/iridiuk whatever. My tyres 38 psi all around. The only thing i'm worried is the fuel filter.
I don't know when its supposed to be changed in a magna.
Mine is a TJ VRX Limited Edition 2001 Manual, 102,000kms If anyone knows. Let me know
I just want to know how that range to empty works!!!

I think so.
The estimated distance to empty is gradually falling each time you fill, so the computer is slowly adapting to your actual mileage. Reset it and it'll probably start off far too optimistic again.

I also have a Manual 2001 VRX Limited Edition, its done 62,000. I got it about 5 and half weeks ago. Ive only filled it twice since then though :D
I got it with a full tank and drove it about 440km till I filled it up, but it still had over 100kms till empty according to the trip computer. Average fuel usage was 12.7L/100km, but I was of course excited about getting a new car and it was the first time driving manual.
First fill I filled it with regular and only just filled it up again today. I got 530ishkm. 70km till empty with average fuel usage of 11.7L/100km.
Today I filled with Caltex Vortex Premium. Only gone about 20 something km's, but have been averaging only 10.2L/100km and was as low as 9.9L/100km. I dont know if its the different fuel or my driving, but I dont think I've been driving softer than normal.
Most of my driving is very short distance, but not too much traffic. Some 10-15km trips thrown in as well.
Your car wouldnt be a black one with red leather I saw advertised a couple of months back would it? I was interested in that one, but I was going on a trip to queensland and when I got back it was gone :( ................ Oh well Im very happy with my one now :)

Wow in my TJ II exec i'm getting 8L/100km and distance left when i first filled up was 460km, but i've driven well over 400km and it still says i have 20L and a range of 250km left.

If I was only getting 400-500km from a tank I would be seriously questioning why my car is drinking so much. For instance, my last non complete refill (approx 55L) saw the DTE state I had 630km left. I pulled into the servo yesterday with 640k on the manual trip with more to go. But every time I fill the tank completely (approx 67L) the DTE shows over 700km and I normally get between 720 to 730km with about 50Km left on the DTE. I do 70% freeway and 30% town driving and am currently averaging 7.8L/100km on ULP with air con on full time and no real consious effort to save fuel. I just drive normally in line with the traffic flow.

I do alot of stop start driving and my KH verada averages about 14.5 to 14.9 but i would be worried if i was averaging over 15.5

i reset my trip computer every time i fill up. a full tank (so full fuel over flows lol) and it gives me 500 sumtimes 520 rand and i drive up to 450-480ks and that on normal unleaded.

I don't really understand my computer, it rekons i got 250km left just seconds before the fuel light comes on if thats the case then i should get 2000km+ to a tank
Also where does it say how many litres are left? i think i found it but it always has a number over 2,000 i don't think my 75L fuel tank holds that much :P

Cold start-stop/start driving kills economy. I get 16-18L/100 in town as I have a 4km commute with lot's of traffic lights.
I also average 23kph when driving in town. You get the idea that I spend a lot of time waiting to get through traffic lights. It does actually take about 10 mins to drive to work.
I'd get the bus but it would take all day as I'm not on a bus route.
When I go out on the open road and cruise at ~115kph for long periods of time I get ~8L/100 or less and that 4km takes 2mins 5 secs.

I get between 6-7L/100k on the M1 at 110kp/h which i think is good, and as for city its hard to keep an eye on it, my average since i got the car is 9.7L/100km most of my driving is highway :)
The highest ive had it is 55L/100k when i floored it to redline in 2nd :D

when changing between different RON ratings, you need to be aware that the car needs time to 'adjust' to the different octane. The ECU will determine the RON rating of the fuel and the computer will adjust accordingly, but this does'nt happen instantly. If you want to try a different RON fuel, you should reset the ECU (disconnect the battery for a few hours) and also make sure you put as much of the new fuel into the tank as you can (from nearly empty). it will probably take up to 200kms of driving for the ECU to properly adjust to the fuel before you get stable results.

The Magna's have a 71 litre tank (think a litre smaller on the AWD models).
As with all 6 cylinder/ big cars (and all petrol engines, though little cars aren't as great a difference in the city/highway economy stakes ) there is a big difference in say highway economy which is normally pretty impressive, compared to a lot of stop start city driving.
My 2000 TJ gets about 12-15 litres per 100 in town, and about 7-9 highway. It all comesdown to typeof driving, whether stop start, or cruising, or bit of both.
My mates BA XR8 auto gets about 10-13 on the highway, compared to 17-25L per 100km's in town. And its only got a 69 litre tank!!!! Ouch.
No knock sensor on the 3.5L Magna, but Optimax is a 'denser' fuel, so you will always get more km's from a tank of it. Normal premium fuels aren' t denser, so less benefit.
Not to mention Optimax is cleaner, and also has cleaning agents in it, which keep everything running better.
People only look at the pump price, not what it works out taking into account extra km's, and benefit of keeping your engine cleaner.
Definately worth the small difference in price in my book.
Now the Optimax Extreme......which has just been pumped up an extra 7 cents over normal Optimax (was only 2cents dearer at launch), well think thats little harder to justify!!!

I go for Ethanol E10 fuel, its 2 cents more at my local servo and is 95 octane, cheaper then the 95 premium :D

on my TH Sports, it only does 20 hour logs (unless there is a way to reset, which I don't know) and when I fill the tank to full it says I have 700 - 750km left til empty. I normally average 9 litres/100km. I normally get about 500km to the tank.. I think for my model, it works out the range to empty according to how much fuel you have left in the tank and your current avg litres/100km..
Great for doing country drives though.. I got from Perth to Dunsborough (about 350km) on less than half a tank

well i filled up on monday with 95RON Caltex Vortex. Currently averaging 10.9L/100km mostly suburban/city driving with a small amount (50-60km) highway stuff...
done 170-odd kms off just under 1/4 of a tank.. which i am rather pleased about.. but i have been driving it EXTREMELY softly, just to see how much difference there would be compared to flogging it all the time..
i have also noticed that i can easily get ~350klms out of the first 1/2 of the tank, then really struggle to get 200klms out of the last half.. its the same with everyone/every car i know..
anyway, petrol consumption doesnt really bother me (it would if it was 'out of the norm' high eg. something wrong with the car) but if i wanted good economy i'd go buy a diesel peugeot 406 or something that can acheive 2000+ klms per tank..

if im drivin from where i live to the gold coast about 190k or so.. ill fill up when i leave here and reset everything and by the time i get to the coast my avg fuel is 8.6-8.8, and if i dont drive anywhere while im there, and top right up b4 i leave my range to empty reads 780-810kms... i have a TH, 3.5l Manual

Hi everybody,
I've had my 2000 TJ VRX for about a month now, and I have found that I have been getting about 14.7L/100km around town and when we went up the F3 to Cessnock, which is a trip I will be doing about once every two months, the best the trip computer gave me was 10L/100km, which is 28mpg in the old money. The car also has nitrogen in the tyres, which is supposed to improve fuel economy.
I had a KJ Verada in New Zealand and that used to do 7 - 8L/100km on a trip, and about 13L/100km around town.
So what's the verdict, is the VRX a gas guzzler in need of a service or was the Verada (Diamante) a particularly good performer, until the Mitsi transmission woes got into it.
Regards
Graham

on my TH Sports, it only does 20 hour logs
Yer i've seen that too, my dads tj vrx buzzed at him at the 20hour mark, ofcourse he'd also just about hit 2000km's on the trip meter, he was doin a cross country run and was about 2 hours away from finishing, little bit miffed at the cpu for that lol. he wanted his whole trip stats without any resets :-)
i guess it means just tryn get tihere in less than 20hours? :-) lol.
as for thr fuel issue, i got told by the mitsu techs that particular models apparently react differently to what your doing with eh cpu/tank/car.
for example, from what ive been told, for the cpu to properly calculate everything, remove your keys from the ingition completely when fueling up, as the cpu does a re-read apparently when u cold key the system.
Also, some models, (i forget wich ones) can apparently detect the different types of fuel in ur tank, for example, fill atank with regular, itll read numbers, run it down and refill with hioctane, it can tell the different fuel and does different numbers.. again, from what ive been told :-)
having said that, when i had my car the first few days/weeks, i always ran it on hioctane fuel, and it would regularly say 800 till empty on a full tank. and on regular fuel lately, it reads 700ish, well, it does now after a service :-)
mind you, thats differnt fuel, different state, so could also include atmospheric things, perhaps the air is metered and factored into the fuel range????
these readings are as im driving away from the servo, and usualy change a fair bit depending on driving being done. avg readings i see are like 6.5l/100 or 8's in traffic, and stupid numbers when i start being silly with the right foot :-)
but i tend to drive around with cruise control on wherever possable, **traffic permitting** :-) imho it helps heaps. 60km zones, anything :-)

Over revving perhaps? hehehe lol
Yeah, there's no need to rev it that much, maybe to around 2000-2500 max. I find in my auto that having it shift up to max 2000 from 1st to 2nd and less in subsequent gears mantains decent acceleration and easily keeps up with the start stop traffic.

does anyone know if different size fuel tanks were options?
my diamante takes around 85 litres to fill, but every one i know that had had one reckons theirs only took 70-75litres...
last weekend when i was leaving christchurch i filled it up, gauge was dead on halfway. $66 later (44.something litres) it was full.
the most ive put in it was 82 litres, the fuel light was on, and the needle on the gauge was about the width of the needle below the 'E' but it hadnt actually run out.
im almost too scared to let it actually run out and see what it will take...

I've got a manual, and in this tank I got nearly 700 mixed city and country, yet my last tank, I struggled to get over 400 mixed city and country, all on the same fuel (Caltex Vortex 95). I didn't drive the car any differently, It hasn't been serviced, and the tanks were full both times. Before this tank, I was averaging 450 mixed, and couldn't squeeze any more than 60 liters into the tank. When I get it serviced, I will get the Trip Computer and the Fuel Gauge looked at. If other drivers are getting about 500, there must be something wrong with mine.
The car rarely sees the other side of 4500 RPM, so it shouldn't be my driving.

Sometimes you have to take into account engine wear and tear. A car's engine etc will not always perform at 100% as the years go by

i've got tj v6 si 3.5 auto with zorst. on a trip 8.2-8.5l/100k round town 12l/100k. round town dont go over 3000rpm(no need, unless playing) towed the boat on a 200k one way trip & went to14.5l/100k. knew there would be a difference but wasn't expecting that much. the boat does act like a big parachute. my theory with fuel is, its full when its full- its empty when its empty & anywhere in between is good.

As the years go by? It hasn't done 30,000 Kms yet. I bought it with 19,000 on the clock. If its not performing 100%, then there is something drastically wrong with it.

Likewise, mine has done 75000km on the motor and it is as sweet as a nut so i dont think my fuel consumption is due to motor wear, but the thing averages 10L/100km on a trip, which is atrocious in my opinion......should get a V8 at that consumption figure.

Ok. Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it. REALLY. I love you all.
BUT
As my question was : Does anybody know how the computer calculates the range to empty distance??
AND
I found out by myself.
This week i did a combination of highway and city driving and averaged 12.3L/100km. Total kms i got was 520km.
I did 120km on the freeway and the rest was short distance.
So when i filled her up with 65L of BP Ulitmate today, reset the computer.
The Range to empty was 530kms. The previous range to empty was 380kms.
So to answer my own question....
The range to empty is calculated by taking your previous average/100kms.
So this means if you drive like a nut over a short distance, the range to empty is gonna show you 380kms and if u drive normal and long distances the range to empty is gonna show you 530kms+
Thank You again for all your replies.

If your DTE is out by a fair whack, disconnect the battery and re-connect 30 mins later, it will adapt to your fuel RON rating, if you change RON ratings all the time, then the trip computer is no good to you, 450-500km around town and 700km on the highway is a good estimate of what you should get in a 3.5L magna if you get better good on ya!
I brought my VR-X and it had 800kms to empty on it, the bloke used 98 RON fuel and it was never going to be right, i reset the ECU and it gave me proper reading for the premium 95 RON fuel i was using and i get 710km DTE driving to perth and 520km DTE around town, it's pretty close but anything that calculates to 10km increments isn't gonna be too flash, Mate has a XR6 AU model and his DTE is to the 1km increment, if that fuel light is on start thinking about a servo stop, want more kms per tank drive like a nanna, I'd personally rather enjoy giving it **** and enjoying the ride then what i get per tank, i now have a EVO IX and you try living with $1.46 p/l for premium fuel and $12 for a bottle of octane booster then go and thrash it around and get 250km to a tank, but **** the buzz is worth it :D
