Hey i was reading a post with all these technical terms in it. I'm just wondering can someone explain to me, what they are and what they do?

> improved flow throttle body
> extractors (i hear this AAAALLL the time)
> head work

Yeh thats it for now, but i think someone should make some definitions for us ppl who dunno anything about mods, but want to do mods.... u know? :D

Sure.

Extractors are another name for headers. Headers are the exiting pipes from the block which send the exhaust gas towards the rear of the car. Extractors implies that they are of a performance nature. Not all extractors are the same as there are different designs. Better exhaust gas removal increases performance.

Throttle bodys are the restricting component of the engine to restrict the amount of air into the engine. Your accelerator operates your throttle body. The accronym WOT is wide open throttle or peddle to the metal. A high flow throttle body was a stock unit but has been machined to optimise the flow path and increase flow. More air in = more fuel needed = more power. This particular mod however aims at more responsiveness than top end power.

Head work is where the heads of the engine are ported, polished or both. Polishing removes lumps and bumps and allows for a smoother flow. Porting increases the size of the inlets / outlets for increased flow. It's not cheap and it's not a backyard mod.

Ok these are all just fairly basic mods...

> improved flow throttle body

The throttle is a valve in the engine that opens and closes when you press the accelerator pedal, Its a big brass butterfly. When you press the pedal it opens the butterfly and lets air into the engine.
You can increase the amount of air that can get in and reduce the restrictions stoping air from flowing by having this machined, (They make it bigger) you could also get a setup with more than 1 butterfly to get more airflow.

> extractors (i hear this AAAALLL the time)

Extractors are part of the exhaust system and replace the piping that goes from the engine to down near the flex pipe. They have better flow than standard headers and you can get a fair bit more power.

> head work
This can be quite expensive and involves talking apart the whole top half of the motor and polishing and machining all the intake passages in the tops of the cylinders as well as the valve seats.
This also inproves flow in the head.

would head work on a 2.4 4cly be worth the effort?

would head work on a 2.4 4cly be worth the effort?probably not... you'ld be better off to start on the 3 or 3.5...... unless you wanted to toybo the 2.4, then it would be worth it, and a bit unique (like a turbo magna isnt unique enough!!)

If you'd prefer to mod the 2.4 then upgrade then the 2.4 responds well to head work. It's a must if you're planning on turbocharging. And a definite good thing to look at if you're modding it N/A

I wouldnt bother with any head work unless you have done all the other basic mods first (extractors, muffler, tb, pod etc) otherwise you will probably be dissapointed. If you are going to leave it NA then get thoese mods done and get a new cam and see how that goes...

Agreed. The gain from these mods is greater than the sum of the gain of these parts.
