Hi All,
Got a few carby problems (i suspect)..
Car will start but stalls unless I put my foot on the accelerator, problem only started after I fitted new spark plugs and leads, and fixed my (major) exhaust leak.. Also changed oil and filter, new coolant and air filter etc..
Just wondering where in SA is recommended to look at/fix carbies, and whether its advisable trying to drive the car down there.. i.e could it be doing damage? My mate looked at it and said that the float isn't set correctly, apparently its above the dot in the sight glass, should this make a huge problem?
Rough cost as well if anyone has had something similar?
Cheers all,
Tim.
this is for his colt... not his sigma, and anyways... we fuel injected the sigma :D
it kinda had a few problems before we serviced it... i'll let tim explain more on that
choke is not sticking though... that's the first thing that i checked for.
i know cos i'm the aformentioned mate that looked at it :bowrofl:
as for taking the carby somewhere in SA, the dude who rebuild my carby is a legend... a carby like the ones mitsu used can really only be "fixed" by taking them apart really...
ps. glad we fixed that friggin exhaust leak... you could hear your car from ages away

Yeh I already got the screwdriver to eat one of the screws but that's someone elses problem.. providing I can find somewhere to take it, preferably near adelaide city..
What would it be worth roughly to take a car somewhere, and say.. fix. Assuming its just a problem with the carby, does anyone here wanna have a look and prod for a carton of something.. and hopefully fix it?
btw Bill your more than welcome to come round and rip the carby off and have a look yourself.. I was just hoping to have the car ready for the weekend..
Cheers,
Tim.

oh btw the colt is an 88 RD, fitted with that air recycling system or whatever is mentioned in the supplement of my colt gregories. Runs unleaded, all bog standard engine I haven't really touched it.
Cheers,
Tim.

umm, with cars not running well, stalling, etc.. always use the old rule of " test ignition first, then check fuel, etc"
sounds to me like it might be a burnt out ballast resistor.. not exactly sure where it is an the old colt.. been 100 years since ive last looked in the early colt's engine bay.. firewall or near the distributor maybe??
run a piece of wire, from one end of the resitor to the other end.. start it, and see what happens.. if it runs and doesn't stall.. then that's it! if it continues to stall.. well.. time to get to a mechanic to look at it!
good luck mate!
p.s: the resistor should look like a small ceramic block.. about 10 or so cms long!

Hmm see its a bit of a weird one, because the car ran fine before we fixed the exhaust leak, and changed all the leads. I'll double check that everything is plugged in 100%, and maybe look at getting another carby from the wreckers on Friday.
Would having the float level too high make the car stall.. i.e its running too rich?
I'll see if I can play around with the ignition stuff, one guy said it may be an ignition lead earthing out somewhere.. we'll see what happens.
I suppose I can't complain if I have to start spending money on it.. it only cost me $50.. lol
Cheers all,
Tim.

Ok well it doesn't seem to be an ignition issue..
Do you think it would be worth getting another carby from UPI, or getting my current one fixed.. gotta swing by there anyway so just thinking i might try one.
Cheers all,
Tim.

Spoke to 2 or 3 various mechanically orientated people at work today, all of them are leaning towards a vacuum issue. I will double check everything tonight when I get home from work.
Car runs 100% once I put my foot on the accelerator maybe just a tiny bit of a push.. but won't idle correctly at all.
I'll give it a run at like 9pm tonight see what I can diagnose..
Any other ideas? If not then cheers for all your help so far guys :)
Thanks again,
Tim.

After a quick run to a carby place in st mary's, they think its the idle jet, or possibly still a vacuum leak. Is it worth fixing up the idle jet or finding a carby at UPI from a car been in a rear ender or something..
Cheers guys,
Tim.
