has anyone had any luck with fitting tweeter splits to the coverplates at the top of the dashboard near the windscreen (TF exec). And if possible is there grille piece that might fit here like from a Verada or something:confused:

being an exec, it would be pretty easy, as you could flush mount the tweeter in the "blank" very easily. i'm sure many people have already done it.

Cut yourself some mdf discs the same size as the blank, flush mount your tweeters into the mdf discs, cover with some appropriately colored speaker grille cloth and bobs your uncle. Should be dead easy, even for a DIY job.

That's exactly what I did :)
First, I made a replacement disc out of 3mm mdf and cut out the hole for the Focal TN47 tweeter. I painted the mdf in matt black to make sure it wouldn't give a shine underneath the grille.
For the grille, I went to Supercheap Auto and got the cheapest 6" coax speaker I could find (worked out to be $10) and grabbed the metal grille off that (and threw the speaker out:badgrin: ) then I painstakingly moulded the grille around the mdf cutout for a near stock finish!!!

I did this with the TN47's.
Not exactly Pro but works OK.

Mulga the TN47's came up a treat, i'm putting in Alpines DLX F177 tweeters so i really don't want them exposed and on display. I think i'll go with MDF option and build them up (like a sliced cone) and cover them with black net cloth so that they're slanted towards the driver. I'll post some pics whem im done.:doubt:

Note that reflections off glass from high frequencies will generally cause comb filtering and is symptomatic of very shrill, harsh vocals.
the Mitsu tweeter pods avoid this (order the VRX/Verada delta covers for ~$15-$18 each from Mitsu
Even better, in terms of imaging, stage depth and overall clarity, mount your tweeters in the kickpanels. As far away as possible, whilst still maintaining good clearance through the bottom of the dash into the listening area.
This creates better path length difference between the left and right tweet. A these frequencies imaging is primarily dependant on amplitude so it is important that each tweeter is roughly the same distance from the listener, then this can be further tweaked by changes in angle (taking advantage of on axis response vs off axis response)
Then again you could just chuck em up on the dash... Just expect it to sound very in our face, and your stage to be on the listeners side of the car compared to in the middle of your windscreen...

btw great work bj :)

this thread has given me some ideas
I like the look of my soundstream tweeter grills, so if i can i want to use them somehow. hmmmm might get me a pair of those triangle tweeter pods and make some alterations :)

yep on the last pair of verada pods I had up there for my ambients i did the same, the cover pops off fairly easily, although it is a tight squeeze you should be able to fit most tweets in there (except my supremos :p)
Now my ambients are at eye level almost on the a-pillar with the supremos diong 90% of the work in the kicks.

yeh well im lucky that dads VRX has the same tweeter pods (im assuming they are exactly the same as the Verada ones?), so when i get around to it i will be able to see if my tweeters fit behind it before i buy a pair. I honestly would be able to just steal them from dads car and he wouldnt notice, he is that dopey, but i'll buy my own pair :P If they fit of course.
And i'll see if i can replace the stock grills with my spideys

thanks for the info S_tim_ulate i was told about the glass being a problem hence i was trying to angle it forwards. When you mentioned the Verada pods, do they sit on the dash?, door?, or A pillar?.
I was also thinking to have the left splits on the left hand sail piece, (a cheap dummy split on the drivers sail piece to balance the look) and then the active right splits on the drivers dr kicker to compensate the difference in distance or am I 'drowning the dog'
I'm really keen on getting the staging right for the driver seat posi.

Consider mounting them on the a pillar then firing across into each other. This avoids reflections off the glass to the listener. (As the tweeter is soo close to the glass firing along the curve there is very little reflection towards the listener.)
As high frequency imaging is primarily based on the intensity of the sound wave(compared to lower levels which are dependent on the phase of the wave)
The tweeter which is closest to your ears is actually pointing almost perpendicular to your ear. With the opposite tweeter pointing almost on axis. As tweeters will be much louder on axis this assists with your staging by equalising the left and right channels.
But you need to also understand that many cheaper tweeters have very poor off axis response. So the reproduction will be noticeably worse off axis (not just attenuated)
Higher quality tweeters (cough supremos, esotars, vifa, dls etc etc) are close to flat on and off axis. So great for staging.
Still the best bet for staging is in the KICKS!
Try it first and see how you like it. (easiest way to get both seats staging well)
See if you can notice how slight changes to the angle shift the image as well.
A good starting point in the kickpanels is to aim them to the nose of the opposite listener.
Peace

Oops missed this one...
The verada/vrx pods sit in the delta section (the small cover where the side mirrors would usually attach.
Experiment with positions first then decide... Builders strapping is great for setting angles right. Find a stock bolt, bolt the strap in and mount the tweet to it, make small changes to it and listen.

i guess it comes down to personal preference but having tweeters, installed so far from your main speaker in the door doesnt sound that great, i installed mine on the door, ...will post a pic in a min :P

thanks for the info guys, i've got them set up at the front angled towards the driver below the top dash panels. I neatly sliced them and bent the slices down ( like a bonnet vent) and hav meshed over the whole panel. Now i've got neat staging and stealth. :D thanks again s_tim_ulate.
