Hey guys,

Just curious as to where is the optimal place to lay deadening in the boot. Say you have a sub box - would it be best to coat the entire boot itself with deadening, or the front of the sub box and the rest of the boot that isnt hidden by the box?

So basically, should you deaden the entire visible surface of the boot before or after your put a sub box in there?

If the pic in you avater is your car then you poor soul have the dreaded 2 piece boot, I had the same in my TE. Best thing to do is to take the outer skin of the 2 piece boot off. From memory there is 5 screws holding it on. The "Magna" silver bit comes off and you can get underneath, I would start there. Then put it all back on and do the reverse side.

Next I would do the back of the number plate.

Next would be the top of the boot ( the flat surface with the brackets / brace things straight in front of you when you have your boot open.

Next I would look at the parcel shelf.

Next I would look at the floor of your boot ( concentrating from the sub box out ).

Next I would look at the wheel arches.

Then hunt around for any bits that are really loose. Hunt them down and add your stuff!!

If you got the truck liner kit you should be able to do most of that. :D Most of the deadening you wont be able to see as it will go under the factory carpet. Only bits you should see is the top and back wall ( and possibly parcel shelf ) of you boot.

Thanks for the reply, the boot lid will be my focus from previous experience. However i was more after a general view of where to limit the use. See picture.

The red is deadener, the black is the boot with the subs. Creating more of a cocoon, because i'd think the sound waves wouldnt be hitting the back of the boot towards the cabin so i could deaden the face of the sub enclousure rather than all of that that sits behind the sub box...

not the best english by me :S

Like the guys have eluded to above, simply install as much deadening as you can afford. If you can afford to go this silly then do it:

The more deadening you place in the car, the lower the noise floor becomes. :D

Zactly...

Dee, I found the major areas (that affect the listener) were the parcel shelf and all the areas on the boot lid esp behind the two piece section (described above) Try laying down strips of thick closed cell foam (draft stopper type stuff) near the edges of the larger garnish as these vibrate alot with bass.

But you can never use too much deadener.

remember to thoroughly clean with prepsol/turps beforehand

has anyone noticed the more sound deadener you put in your car the higher the outside noise becomes ?

seem the more i put in mine the louder it becomes ... nearly to a point the noise in the car from the road is incredible

I'm scared to ask but how much deadening have you got there? as in how many packs?

I got a bulk pack which gives me 9 18x32" sheets so obviously no where near as much as you have but im just curious as to how much you have actually used?

i used 3 bulk packs in my efforts ... plus a door kit

2 bulk kits in the boot
1 bulk kit to do the top of the parcel shelf and down to the floor behind the back seat and strangly enough the door kit to do the front doors

plus i got 3 sheets off a friend to do the rear doors

lol i ran out after using a bulk pack, just on my boot interior. Ordered another 2, and they're on their way.

1 pack basically covered the left side of the boot, the back of the boot, the right side of the boot and 1/2 the floor. (but this was a heavily overlapping, no gaps job)

Just mind the fingers when your laying it.. trying to smooth it out with hands = millions of deep long cuts because of the aluminium. :(

when you open the box it looks like there is heaps in there but once you start it does'nt go very far

dont expect to do a boot with 1 boot kit specially if you want to be generous with it ... i think even if you skimped on it you still would'nt do the whole boot

Really... **** i was told it would do the boot and the front doors... Hmmm think i'll have to ask for even more of a discount if i have to buy another pack!

OMG Dee you went all out on the boot didnt you! haha i was thinking just doing the top of the boot, behind the garnish, the sides (1/4 panels) and parcel shelf would be enough for the boot. Obviously not haha

Now that you've done all that you have to do nuts on the whole car, roof, doors, floorpan :P

Well this afternoon was fun. Took about 40mins to polish off another bulk pack. But all of the boot is now done. Took off the top of the boot too, and layed a layer of dynamat under the top boot lid, and another layer on the outer of the boot lid, then another layer on top of the boot lid again. Hehe. Mind you... being the noob that i am managed to accidently place my boot lid piece on the ground - painted side down - and create a million little scratches on it. Needed it repainted anyway...

So 3 layers all around on the lid, and solid, overlapping layers everywhere else :D

im close to needing gas struts to keep the boot lid open.. haha.

Just bought my roller, start laying it tonight hopefully.

How did you get the boot garnish off tho dee? i tried last night adn got stuck.

There are 6 plastic "nuts" that go onto the bolts from the garnish. 4 in the far corners and 2 just in from them. You have to take the number plate off, theres 1 plastic screw inbetween the numberplate lights and 2 plastic clips along the bottom edge that are a pain to get to... ok i got all these but it still wont come out! what am i missing?

By the sounds of it, your missing the 3 screws that hold the boot garnish on (and concequently the boot lid cover).

Down in near the main latch there should be the centre nut which you can access through one of those holes in the lid (just sit your bum in the boot and look up). Then, you can try and locate the other 2 to the left/right of that centre one.

Did inbetween the boot and the boot trim last night.... God its time consuming haha,
But because of the extra width it doesnt all clip in along the bottom edge anymore so i think im going to have to trim it down i little. Now ive stopped that vibrating i have found that the spare wheel cover (wooden lid) vibrates like a mofo against the metal so (for now) i have put a thin strip of dynamat between it and the metal, No more rattle there :) Then the air ports into the boot hidden on the left side are making a racket... there next! haha.

I dont have the budget to go crazy like Dee unfortunately so i'm going to be doing as much as possible with 1 Bulk pack. then maybe as funds permit ill add to it.

Dee

haha yer but if i get a rattle, it will be under layers of dynamat already.. ahaha which will piss me shat indeed. haha. least u can pin point, i have nothing in there to test it wiht.
