Today i installed the head unit into my TE. everything went okay, i grounded it first and the pluged in the other cables, everything worked! then i decided to firmly attach the the ground wire. i moved it and it sparked:nuts: .

Now i wired everything up. When i turn off the car the head unit stays on for like 5sec, then turns off. then the screen looks dead. the time is ment to be displayed once the car is off. i no there is nothing wrong with the head unit! (all stations are still in the memory)

Now i have no idea if i stuffed up something bad? the car runs ok, but i'm worried? Does anyone know were i stuffed up, How can i fix it?

Once again any help/suggestion will help.

mate i think u got that wrong, i would think the time should be displayed only when the head units off and the car is on or on accessories

usually cars come with a memory and an acc cable for the h\u but magnas and veradas only come with a memory cable( well mine did) that is also used as an acc ie the h\u is permanently turned on.

well boys it makes me feel a lot better:D

I'm just saying the whole story so maybe i missed something

Do many other people have the same problems? If they do (speacially in a TE) Let me KNOW? PLEASE!

is my problem normal?

It sounds like the earth connection isn't strong enough.

-was the battery disconnected when you were installing it???
-did you connect your earth of off the stock unit/loom??

if so, try this;
disconnect your battery (-negative first!), then run your earth wire from the headunit to the metal bracing behind your dash (use a screw to hold it in).
This metal bracing is fixed to the chassis of your car so this ensures you have a solid earth connection.

I've had the same problem with my previous 2 cars .. Only difference was my HU stayed on for about 1 second.

i didn't disconect the original earth connection, as i don't no were to find it . Yer and i was lazy and didn't disconect the battery. i earthed it the metal bits around the gear box.

Sorry mate but you're completely wrong, all magnas come with both. The headunit should switch off when you turn the car off, otherwise you're going to pull juice from the battery (i guess wouldn't be so bad if you always took the faceplate off anyway though).

The spark may have blown a fuse somewhere, but if the headunit is turning on, i doubt that's it. Could be a ground issue like someone said, in my TR the headunit wasn't grounded properly and it would do crazy random things at times.

If the clock's sposed to stay on when you turn the car off but it's not check that you haven't got the +ve and +acc wire's round the wrong way...

Edit: Bleh! Just re-read... all memory is still there... Never mind.

dude i think u grounded your hu to the head lights cricuit, my bro did the same thing and couldnt figure out why the hu went crap when he turned the lights on, i came round took a look and he had attached the ground to a spare wire lying around to to metal on the car, just so happened to be head light circuit

like i said before, connect the ground wire to the chassis somewhere behind the head unit. It won't conflict with anything

no help at all, might just mean u drained the battery a bit more, to fix your NON showing clock problem, turn the car off and put it on accessories, i have no idea why a clock would show all the time, if u had a wire that was only for the clock, then this would go to a constant 12v wire, if not then the memory wire would be its power source, so if you have wired it up, it turns off, and it doesnt forget anything, and it doesnt have a wire only for clock then u have done it correctly,

for the turning off delay, u should try a more direct and stronger earth, but mine takes a couple secs to turn off completely, i turn the car off it fades then just blinks off,

BTW i am assuming the clock is in the cd player itself, if not check the fuses, my bro had his hu stolen earlier last year, dont know why u would its a piece of crap, but when he got the new hu he noticed the clock would turn on anymore and checked the fuses, one blue fuse was blown

where abouts are the fuses, under the bonnet, next to the battery?
in my car there is only one.

there are fuses behind the drivers kick panel aswell

JAP_SPEC_TE

so where are the ones for the head unit and the clock in a TE

D@ve

dont know about the TE but in my TR they are in the drivers side kick panel on the right and up a bit

There are some under the bonnet as well, unsure of there exact location

the ones under the bonnet wouldnt be specifically for the clock or audio, well i wouldnt think they would be, arent on my car

i checked but there is no specific fuse for the clock, on a TE it just lights up when you turn the car off, (on the head unit).

Is it an connection that i F###ed up, cause the head unit only turns off when i am charging my phone in the cigarette lighter. Otherwise it stay on for like 4-5 sec after i turn off the car.

this is really hard to solve without being there in person, but i think that a bigger, more direct wire to the chassis should solve your 4-5sec delay, but the clock thing, hmm, got me stumped atm

Went down to an audio installer and he said that something about the coverter (something starting with C) is stuffed in the cd player and that is why it does that, he mentioned that the earth wire could have something to with it, but its no problem. Just a matter of getting used to it.

The clock, he said they normally aren't displayed so don't worry, made a joke about it and that was that.

Yer but i have decided just to get a stock cd player (ei. ke verada is hooking me up :bowrofl:)

i tried to understand all this..

so your HU is staying on for 5 seconds after you remove your key? is that right?

If so.. its normal.. some kind of magna thing. Happens in mine and other people on here have found it aswell.

completely normal, enjoy it.

something starting with a C...capacitor?

Do you think it might have something to do with your car being a JAP_SPEC? lol Is it really?

Must be something really wacky going on with the ACC wire (the one connected to the red wire on the back of the h/u). Did u test it with a multimeter beforehand? To see if it's the headunit's problem/function, use a cable and put 12V through both the ACC and constant power cables, then take off the ACC and see if it still stays on for 5s. If it does, then it's a headunit function, if it doesn't its your car.

Find a ACC source, there is definately one there, and it doesn't stay on for 5s after you switch off the car. You said your h/u turns off if you charge your phone? You're not using the ciggie lighter 12V as the ACC for your head unit are you?. Oh, up the ground cable thickness while you're at it. 10-12 gauge would be sexy.

Uno...maybe you did chronically fry something lol

Mine Stays on for around 3 Secs after the key is removed.. I have a feeling it is the last circuit to be killed by the Ignition system..

yeah, mine stays on for a few secs, but the second you flick the key, it starts it's shutdown process...which is to say 'goodbye' and some fancy flickering :P lol
