View Full Version : help with RHS power mirror
I just clipped my driver's side power mirror today as I was reversing out of the garage  The whole thing pretty much unfolded the wrong way.
The external casing still seems ok though. It stays in place fine and can fold inwards as normal. The glass is still ok too but either something broke or came undone on the inside. The top left corner of the mirror comes out and I can see inside. The two motor pulleys are still connected and appear to be functioning but that's the only thing holding the mirror in place. There's an axle sort of thing in the middle which lookd like the mirror should be connected to, and a silver wire on the left which looks like it's either broken or should clip on to something.
Can anyone give me any advice? Does it sound fixable? How can I dissmantle and reassemble the thing? If I need to buy a new one around how much is it gonna cost me new?

i cant help you with how to get it apart, i have a 2nd gen, but if you want to make sure its all hooked up properly, get someone on here to give a tip on how to dismantle it, and check that the wires are all connected, the axles fine and that they work after u fiddle

Damn, I don't want to spend any more money on it. It's funny, I've never scratched a car in my life before this, on Friday I spend $1000 on a major service, and the next day I clip my mirror
So anyone know how to dismantle one?

if u wanna know how to dismantle them, get a wrecker one, and SMASH IT just until it cracks open, then see how it was put together, and try it on yours, if it doesnt work easily on yours stop, or u might break something, take another look at the wrecked one see if you missed something, and repeat etc...
this is how i solved fixing mine, yet they are fixed as i have manual mirrors and they dont work purely because a rubber thing disintegrated and i cant buy a spare one, rubber bands are in place atm
I've uploaded a picture of how it looks. As you can see it's only hanging on by the two pulleys.

1 day i parked at Dick Smith and was in there for about 20 mins and when i came out i noticed the mirror part was hanging out due to someone openeing their car door straight into my mirror and the out i pushed it back in and sounded like it clipped in? It works fine now but still have a mark on the mirror surround! Stupid people not watching when they open their doors!
I had sticky tape holding it together for the last few weeks but I was still pissed off so I decided to have another go at fixing it today. Luckly it seems nothing was broken and I got it back together in perfect working condition!
Since I'm in a good mood now I thought I'd post a few pics and my findings for future reference, or for some light entertainment lol
Ok, so to recap I reversed out of my garrage one morning and clipped the driver side mirror. It folded all the way outwards as in pic 1 (I thought this was a bad thing but it seems they were designed to do this too, cool).
Something was dislodged inside though and I was left with something similar to pic 2. The two red circles show two clips connecting the mirror to the two motors. This was the only thing holding it in place. Notice also the rounded ball-point pillar in the middle and the large clip holders on either side. These are supposed to clip in to the square plate from pic 3 (more on that later).
The first challenge was getting enough space to work with and see what's going on. For this I had to take the mirror face-plate off. The 4 red clips from pic 4 connect to the 4 green clip holders in pic 3. This is the only thing holding it together and the clips come off pretty easily just by force. What I did is stick a flat screwdriver between the face place and clip holders in pic 2 and twisted. This was enough to undo the clips. If your mirror isn't hanging out like mine and can't stick a screwdriver in between the clips directly, then I hear you can wrap a screwdriver with some cloth, stick it in from the underside of the mirror and gently try to pry it outwards to release the bottom two clips, then the top.
Anyway, with the faceplate off I noticed that the red clips circled in 2 were sticking outwards too much and couldn't be pushed in. So using the pliers from 5 I squeezed the clips tightly and pushed inwards. Thought I broke something when they went most of the way in but I think that's how it's supposed to be. With the clips now properly connected to whatever's inside (covered by some rubbery thing) I could push the square plate from 2 in much deeper. This thing has to clip on to that ball-point thing in the middle and the two giant clips on the side (circled in red in 2). This took quite a bit of force and faith and it was making some pretty weird sounds but it finally clipped in.
Then it's just a matter of reattaching the mirror by simply aligning it properly and pushing in on it till you hear all the 4 clips (from 4) snap in place and Bob's your uncle!
Oh, and pic 5 shows the only tools I used, along with my favourite chair :p
Anyway, I know I suck at technical descriptions and stuff but maybe this will help someone out in the future, or at least give someone a good laugh. Either way, it's all good! I'm just glad I didn't take it down to Mitsu and let them charge me $250 for a new mirror lol
PS: Oh, and as for the wire thing on the left in pic 4, I have no idea what that does or what it's supposed to do so I took it outlol
my mirrors shake when i turn the stereo up... wonder if this will fix it :P

Added this to the wiki here (http://www.wermspowke.net/wiki/index.php/Exterior#Dismantling_and_fixing_broken_wing_mirror s). Hope that's alright :D
Yeah, that's cool. Anyone feel free to edit or add to it too.
