How good are the stock speakers in the magna?
The seem to put out quite a bit of noise even with the stock crap tape deck and not bad quality!
The 6 x 9's in the parcel tray are eurovox's and seem to be pretty good quality! I dont know about the 6 inchs on the front door, but i'm aussming they are eurovox as well!
I'm on a bity of a tight budget at the moment with comprehensive insurance payments coming, so i was thinking of just starting off with a decent head unit. Would that get better sound quality and stuff outof the current speakers?
Plus where is the best place to shop for car audio in sydney?

the stocks in my TH altera were excellent! (6 inch splits in the front, 6x9's in the back, i had them running of a alpine 4x75w amp, with bass cut out. infact, they're the last thing i've upgraded... (well i haven't gotten around to changing the fronts yet... waiting for enough time)

ok i dont know much about speakers but what i have experienced the stock speakers in my 99TH Solara were only like 15-20Watts , and i replaced them with 200watts 3 way $50 speakers (Dominators) , and sound was much better and i was using stock stereo.
(I put the stockies back on when I sold the car thinking that i will put 200watts speakers on untill i really have money to up grade)
But in my TJ sports the rear speakers are 40 watts with some extra capacitors and although they are not 2/3 way , they handle very very decent bass from stock unit and dont let sound get distorted.
so i tried one 200 watts and one stockie 40watts and guess what stockie was a winner in handliing bass. was abit low on the trebile side but bass effect is just like a low end subwoofer in car.
for front Splits i think the are also very good.
so yeah i might change the head unit next year but speakers will be the last thing i will spwnd money on.

Stock sterio is crap.. in my TJ sportz i got rid of the 6x9's with sony 3 ways and the fronts where even worse so got fusion 6.5inch 2 ways and it sounds soooo much better even running off the factory cd player.
As for a place in Sydney go to FHRX studios :D They will do you a good deal on almost any brand as they sell most sony, pioneer, jaycar, alpine, clarion, xtant, audison, JL, kicker, D/L/S, hertz, boston, etc etc.

Well of course this is going to be the case, the stock HU pumps out a massive 5 watts, how the heck do you expect it to push around a speaker capable of handling 200. with probably a S/N ratio of about 89dB.
Those 200 watt speaker that are probably no more than 100 continious need a amp to drive them, do that and see which one sounds better then.
The stock HU and speakers are made to work together, they are not to bad but definately not great either.... Actually a nice 6x9 that handles heaps of bass and runs well of a good headunit is Eclipse's 6x9 that are in the Ralli/Art Magna, they Handle heaps of power from amps, have a great bass repsonse and have a huge S/N ratio of 98dB, this means you don't need heaps of power to make them work, go listen to a Ralli/Art.

You must have never heard a really good set of split then, while they aren't so bad they distort in the higher range, go listen to a good set and then see
As for HU,
what is your budget for a HU......

ok i will take my words back , i had no idea that stock head unit in sports was only producing 5 watts :) but trust me its much better that stock setup in solara.:)
When i will have extra $$$ i will start off with HU, may be something like clarion zx835 (or some thing liek that for $699 ) it got alot of suttf (3 RCA out, 2 x input, dvd control, WMA/Mp3, 6 channel etc etc) , so hopefully by mid nex year prices will be in the rage of $500 .

i say do not get caught up in the numbers game, if your system sounds good to you than thats all you need. Stock car stereos have improved infinitely since a few years ago and in my TJ2 it is pretty good(not great). I m planning on changing the HU to possibly a JVC, i like the PICT feature of the JVC's which lets u assign pictures to mp3 folders and have them on the HU. Custom screensavers and short animations are also a cool feature otherwise they have mostly same features as all other average decks....

good choice! i have the KD-SH9105... VEEEERYY nice head unit. well worth the $999 price tag! definately the easiest access MP3 deck i've seen (especially when u organise in folders etc) and not many other decks have 7 band EQ or 4V pre-outs, internal amp switch off, tilt-face, remote control, etc etc...

The stock speakers from my TJ sounded shit. Even at the time with an ~$400 kenwood CD player + 4x50 amp (with gains at 1%) they still sounded completely shit.
Replaced with RRP$999 Boston Pro Series splits though :p
