Now that i finnally have rims  (im still in the grin phase, every time i think about them i still can't help but breaking out a grin :D)
AAANNYYYway, its time to do the absolutly obligatory red caliper painting! I want to do red as it stands out nicely and i think it will be a nice contrast with the silver rims and black body...
Im going to be painting the calipers, the rotor hubs and ends and even the dust cover... thats right baby! Im thinking just getting a wire brush and getting into all the rusty / dirty bits, cleaning them up a bit and painting away...
Who's done this before? How did you go about it? Any tips?
Peace

I did the exact same thing on mine. make sure you use engine enamel. I put mine of 6 months ago and it still looks like the day I put it on. just put paper and masking tape over around your guards and behind the discs and paint away. once it is dry go for a drive and just ride ya brakes a lil. it will smell for a little while but it goes away.

Seen as tho paint is my job..I feel compelled to give this ciritical piece of advice.
Prepare prepare prepare!!
The cleaner the substrate (fancy paint guy talk for surface being painted!) the better the paint will adhere. EVEN if it says it can be used on dusty surfaces....still clean it! ;)
There's a product you might want to grab seen as tho you're using an enamel.
It's called Penetrol and it's made by Flood. This stuff is the most unbelievable stuff ever made...it'll make paint stick to anything. Wipe a nice thin/medium coat of this across the calliper and stuff that you're painting...wait about 15-20 mins and paint...paint will cover better and it will almost be a beautiful smooth gloss in one coat!!!
:) I highly recommend always doing 2 coats tho. Just to be sure.
Anyways...any more tips or advice..just ask..my consultancy service charged at $100/hr :P lol

Cheers for that guys.
Im going to be giving it about 3 coats, taking my time and doing it right whilst pretty much painting everything... Im estimating my car will be off the road for two days... I'll spend one day doing the front and two days doing the rear.

other way around if anything blake,
2 days doing the front, and 1 day doint the rear, because, your front brakes get more of a hammering then your rear ones..
for example, ive got mine red, and my rear ones look like there from the factory, but my front ones show their usage. im had small amount of peeling from my front calipers and are a lot more dirty than my rears. so make sure your front ones have more coates of paint then your rears!
plus you should be able to get all of your callipers done in one day, thus leaving your second day allowing em to dry...
do your front coat, then rear, leave for a hour or so, then do the second coat, hour, then the third coat, after a few coats, id do no less then 4 coats next time i spray em, leave for one full day to drive... they will be completly dry and will look nice n shiny! :) not to mention you kinda look like brembos

i personally would pull them right off the car - leave it on chocks for a couple of day - well not chocks - but chassis stand! and pull them all off - paint them then put them back on again - but thats me!! when i get my wheels i will be doing mine neon green - for a different sort of look!!
and when your car is off its wheel - you can put them inside - reducing the risk of them being stolen!! haha!!
well - that's what i would do!!

I will probobly take the caliper off the bracket and let it hang or rest it on something but still leave the hydrolic line hooked up. Don't want to remove the caliper completely.
Im going to try the stuff killbilly mentioned aswell, should do the job nicely.
I saw a prelude with neon green calipers, looked good but they would get dirty quick.

Even if I didn't paint the calipers red, I would highly recommend painting the rotor, edge of the disk and dust cover black becuase it was all rusty/ looking crap.

Any hardware store should have it.
Should be near the turps, metho and paint stripper...stuff like that

wow this is a really old thread lol
I agree with Dan, if your going to paint your calipers make sure you paint your rotors (non contact parts) and dust cover also as when they are rusty they look crap!
I painted everything RED in my 2.4 and it looks great, made the brakes look massive, if you do rotors black and dust cover black it will make the job more suttle.
As for green vs red, I still belive red is the best, hell its the fastest colour :D

Took mine off completely and gave them a helluva grind with wirebrush tip on a angle grinder. Problem is the brake fluid mess after and all the bleeding work....
Perhaps manual wire brushing is sufficient if appropriate undercoat stuff is used like KB mentioned - then you can leave the brake hoses on, but just unbolt them from the wheel.

I sprayed with brake cleaner, unbolted everything (except for the brake fluid line), used coat wire hangers to hold them to the suspension, put some tape on the rubber boots, wire brushed (wearing a mask, asbestos is bad mmkay), resprayed with brake cleaner and then painted. Took an entire day to do all four calipers and rotors. Didnot undercoat as the black paint was nice and sticky. three coats for front, two for back.

I'm considering yellow.. against my Inca Green it would be a nice contrast. If you use a primer, then white enamel, then 2 coats of the color enamel, it makes the color a LOT more vibrant such as on powder coated Brembos.

Anyone got any pics? Im very interested to see the effects the different colours give against different coloured body paint.
Cheers.

by looking at the pictures, you have taken when you painted the calipers, looks like the surface wasn't flat at alll, mate please be careful if the car fell down, you would have been somewhere else now!
nice job BTW

why not just powdercoat them? they are cheap and resist high heat

Trust me mate, where I had the car was very flat. I know it dropped away steeply beside the car, but the actual car was flat.
Thanks for the comments :)
