hey guys
Im about to upgrade my rear speakers in my car
Im not planning on getting a sub anytime soon so i have 2 choices for bass.... 6x9's using spacers or 6.5's..........i havent heard a car with either so i dont know which would make better bass (its in the cressida not a magna :))
Thanks everyone!

6X9s by far make better bass because their bass cone is much bigger. i have been into motoquipe and seen the soundstream ones make huge bass, i have some pioneer 6X9s in my car (without spacers) and they made stacks of bass.
but that wasnt enough for me so i went and bought a sub:D

mate if you like rock/heavy metal, 6x9's will blow your brain.
and yeah they give tons of bass, 6.5"s give next to nothing.
you know what i'd recommend so i aint gonna say it again.
good luck!

why would you say that (not accusing just asking)

I've been told by a few people that 6.5" will sound better because they are circles which makes the sound more real. Dunno how true it is, but i've listened to 6x9's and 6.5" from the same brand around about the same price and the 6.5" sounded heaps better. It all comes down to quality speakers. A quality 6.5" will own a sh!t 6x9" and vice versa. Make sure you guys are comparing them to similar spec speakers.

yeah im looking at spending between 150 and 200 so hardly high spec!

A 6.5 may have a more "ballanced" sound because the higher frequencys are more noticeable (cos thers less bass) but 6x9 will always make more bass as it has a larger surface area and moves a larger amount of air.

True that you get more bass with the larger surface area, but i find the 6.5" sounds better sound quality wise. But then it goes on the principal, are you after loudness or quality?

up the front eventually i will have 5.25's with tweeters etc so im really looking for just something that can make deep notes mainly with rock music but also some doof doof
because of your budget i'd say go for 6x9's as their are better 6x9's than 6.5's around for around 150-200, but i actually believe a real decent set of 6.5" speakers will give a good amount of quality bass whereas 6x9" speakers seem to give more bass, but it seems flatter to me, dont know if u understand me, but i dont know how to explain it

yeah i kinda get ya, would having spacers reduce sound quality/cause rattles?

JBL 6x9's will do the trick, I listen to metal, and it's enough to satisfy anyone. Even with the doof doof you get bass, to a certain point before it get's distorted :(. But hell yeah the 6x9's are great to have in the back.

6x9's will put out more bass as the woofer component is equivilant to an 8inch woofer. Therefore having 2 of them is like having a medium size sub. 6.5inch in you price will not play as low and a 6x9.
Having said that, to get a 6x9 moving you will need an amp, and if you really need an amp to get the bass you are after.. why not spend the money on a sub???

JBL GTO 936e's
they have great highs
nice bass notes
everything
all for the measly sum of around $130!
these are almost identical to the infinity refeernce range? i think, and these 6x9's were almost $270 a pair RRP, but JBL own infinity and these are the same speaker just different cosmetically, even if you go to the JBL website and the infinty website the descriptions are the same word for word.
mate i pumped these up today with some killswitch engage (they are f**ken heavy with some mad drums) and man......what can i say.....these speakers are f**ken awesome.
you know what has my vote for loud music mate.
but again, these arnt a crap speaker, you will be ultra happy with these as i am with them!

Don't bother with modifying your car; if it's 6 x 9's then get 6 x 9's,
They do have more bass

Well lets face it, he isn't going to get more bass by making his 6 x 9 holes into 6.5" holes. Which is what this thread is about isn't it?

i thought you told him not to worry about modifying full stop.
yeah for backs go the ol' school 6x9s

put in the 6x9" spacers, you'll find that the bass put out by 6x9's at that price range will out do nearly all 6.5" speakers at about that price, but it depends on how much effort you are willing to put into when putting the spacers on, would u cover the outside in carpet, paint it, etc...

Buuster has some Eclipse 4way 6x9's in her car, only about $179 and they sound like there is a sub going when we got the sub turned off!!!! They are amazing speakers, and for the price, i dont think you would get much better.

do you have a model number of those eclipse ones?

I agree with D@ve... At that pricepoint 6x9's are the go, especially considering the extra effort to fit 6.5's in.
If the budget was $400+ it would be a different story. 6x9's can handle a crapload of power, but there isn't really many 'high end' 6x9's compared to high end conventional 6" splits.
JBL's hammer...
High pass them if possible to keep the sub freq's away. b/w 60 and 200 hz depending on ur tastes and power.

Hey buddy,
Instead of spacers, why not rebuild the parcel shelf out of MDF?
I owned a 1989 Cressida (Before my 1999 Verada xi), and rebulit my parcel shelf to put my 6x9's on, and the sound was fantastic. You won't need the spacers (ugly looking sometimes) and you'll get better bass response from the speakers, plus less vibrations and less rattles.
Trust me (and the 1000's of others that have done the same).

ORRRR to make the spacers a bit more firemer just give it a coat of paint on SD to harden up the surface, but remaking the parcel shelf outta MDF is a great idea..

Back in the day when I worked at Westside we made them out of MDF, fitted the 6x9" then clothed over the entire lot - the speakers.
Or false shelf etc...

Top Suggestion and One I highly recommend..
I had 6x9's Firing through a 6 inch Hole.. I had OZ Audio 6.5 inch Woofers on the Back Shelf and the 6x9's Killed them for sound..
I rebuilt the Rear Shelf using 12mm MDF, Used a MDF 6x9 spacer, some Bog and Made the MDF Speaker Spaces Blend into the rear shelf.. It Made it look Stock once Covered with some Sub box carpeting..
Run them at Full Range, They are a Full Range Speaker they will handle the Highs and the lows, When you get your Sub, You just fade them to the front a little more...

yeah i dunno about making a shelf i will have a look later on, how many 'way' speakers would i need, 4way seems a litttle excessive?
[TUFFTR]
23-03-2006, 07:18 AM
dont think of "ways" as a mean how good the speaker is.
i think my JBL's are 3 ways ( 2 tweeters 1 woofer) and they crap over pioneer 4 ways.
you can do a bit of searching but you'll find the JBL's hard to pass by.
i hope you dont want 4 ways for the sake of saying "on my parcel shelf i have 8 speakers:doubt: " hate it when people say that...
anyhoo...you can still use spacers for the time being, just buy some spray on Sound Deadner and spray the inside of them to make them stiff as a horses......leg.....
cheers buddy

A 2-way will do fine..
With a 6x9, The Woofer Does most of the Work, Anything situated above the woofer will block some of the Mid bass out put, so a 2-way with a Reasonably well Built Silk Dome Tweeter will do fine..
Give me a Budget and I will give you some Suggestions..
( Is color a preference as well???)

In regards to 2/3/4 way speakers... It's only a matter of how many times the full range sound is split up into seperate drivers. If more drivers are present, with less freq. range to cover, you will get better sound. However, you will find that some 4 way speakers will block some of the bass drivers sound.
3 ways are good, 2 ways are good.... Bottom line, no matter how many "ways", just spend your money wisely on a good pair.

As i said, with the subs off, those eclipse 4way's still get the car shaking, and you can feel it through your seat. if your going for heaps of bass, good sound quality, and low budget, go for them. if you can get them to distort at a volume where you can stand to be in the car (with doors and windows shut), let me know :D
