Ages ago I had a ticking noise from the lash adjusters? (I think thats it? Or valve stem collets or something..I cant remember). But I found a nice way to clean them out that was designed by the engineers at mitsu.
1)Warm the car up
2) Rev the car smoothly to 3,000rpm in 15 seconds, then take your foot right off the gas (dont ease it back..just pull your foot off)
3) Let it idle for 15 seconds
4) repeat the 30 second cycle 5-10 times
It got rid of the ticking in mine in about 5-6 cycles.

KB, how often would you being doing this revving thing?
I have the same problem (rattling in the left of the engine), I don't want to have to do this 5 minute procedure all the time.
Is there anyway to permenantly fix it?

lol Thanks mate :)
I dunno how often..whenever you hear the ticking I spose.
I've only done it once
I have the same problem (rattling in the left of the engine)
If its rattling, which only happens at idle and goes away at about 1300rpm+ its probably your balance shaft chain or Timing Chain, you can buy a timing chain kit, which includes the 3 chains and guides etc.. for $170. Fairly cheap for the kit, but getting someone to put it in for your is gonna kick you in the ass.....unless you know a mechanic which will do it at mates rates yur lookin at about $700-$900.

Well for starters if it is a lash adjuster in the end it will have to be replaced.
If it is a timing chain, which would not just start to rattle form a burn out, I can not see why you can not get it done a hell of a lot cheaper than 700 bucks. It is about 4 hours work engine in.
This is of course assuming you have a 4 cyl and not a 6.
usually its the balance shaft chains which rattles, the whole front, top and sump needs to come off, and seeing as though the timing chain kit includes the balance shaft chain, both chains are usually replaced. well maybe its a bit cheaper than 700, but i got left drive shaft and cv changed, and got my valves grinded all at the same time, + new belts and fluids and cost me over $800.
Ive had my dad (nowhere near a mechanic) change teh chains and guides himself, didnt take too long, all spelt out in the gregories.
Whenever i decide to do it, when i can get access to an actual garage lol, im gonna do it myself. $170 for chains, few beers for installation. satisfaction of soing it yourself.
Read the gregories, it really isnt that hard, just a while under the car, lotsa nuts to remove...

You do not have to take the head off for starters and Ihave even done it in a hurry before witht he sump still on as well as the head.
The balance shaft will give a rattle at idle but so can the timing chain. The difference is the timing chain rattle usually goes away after about 30 seconds provided the tensioner is not clogged.
The balance chain is also adjustable, if it is not too rattly it can be easilly adjusted, depending of course on it's age.

its not a rattle at idle, but a quick loud rattle for 2 seconds at start up.....
