Hey all...

I know how buying parts is sometimes a pain, especially when it is for a different model and they ask for a VIN. Also great to check what you have bought isn't something someone hasn't put the extra parts onto :) I printed this out from a website ages ago (cannot remember where) and though it would be useful.

The Vin is structured like so.

A = Geographic Area (6 - Australia)
B = Country within area (M - Australia)
C = Manufacturer (M - Mitsubishi)
D = Line (T - Magna, K - Verada)
E = Series ( E / J / L )
F = Engine / Transmission
1 - Unleaded 3.5 Litre Manual (Ralliart only)
2 - Unleaded 3.5 Litre Auto (Ralliart only)
3 - Leaded 3.0 Litre Manual
4 - Leaded 3.0 Litre Auto (also 3.5 Litre LPG in L series)

H = Body Type (42 - Sedan, 46 - Wagon)

K = Body Number ( 000001 - 999999)

i dont have a magna owners manual, but in my VP commodore's manual, it Explained the VIN meanings........

Shows the parts guy is an idiot - TF6D46 46 being wagon.

TF - Model
6 - Unleaded 3.0 Litre Automatic
D - Executive
46 - Wagon

The year... Well, I only have 1998-2003 information...

Apologies for thread mining guys,

I recently had the need to decipher a VIN so this helped me a lot - while looking for a replacement door I came across what I suspected was an AWD model and needed a way to confirm it.
At the right price that could be a huge win, so thanks a lot guys!

One thing I wanted to contribute (hence joining the forum) was that there may be some subjectivity in the model codes...

I own an early build # '00 TJ VR-X, was friends with the previous owner when it was purchased, one of the first sold in WA.
But, the build plate clearly says TJ9S42YT, not V.

Im reluctant to believe that it was a dealer bodge as it has the VR-X dash, seats, engine cover, badging, exhaust tip, etc. - not sure if there'd be anything left to gain after putting all that on it - so that would only leave the possibility of some build plates being a little off?

Original VRXs are simply Sports with an option pack as far as VINs are concerned I believe.

Correct, the J series VRX have the S in the VIN Number, was not until the L series that this was then shown as being a VRX as opposed to a sports (VR in the L series)

FYI, doors from Te to TJ are identical, L series doors can be used on the early ones as well if you are prepared to drill the holes for the lower plastic strip, have done this on several occasions
