Hi All,

In the next couple of weeks I'll be starting to progress my audio setup which will include installing two amps. One for the front and rear speakers and one for the subs.
I was just wondering which battery make/model would be best suited to power the two amps? I'll be keeping the alternator standard.
I also went to autosalon on the weekend and some of those audio setups include 3 or more amps, how are they powered, by a dual battery setup?

Appreciate your help,
Chris

ok, some rough rough rough knowledge i have

is go for a deep cycle battery for the stereo, something like the optima batterys which can be run flat hundreds of times, looking at over $300 for one of these.

I THINK it has been advised that the alternator should be upgraded, i cannot confirm this.

pretty sure Mysti has done this, might wanna shoot her a PM

Unless your planning on doing a lot of listening to your sound system with the engine turned off, then all the power for your sound system is coming from your alternator. So if your going to be running a high powered system you would have to look at a bigger alternator. But as a battery upgrade for when the engine is off, yeah optima batteries are good, something like a yellowtop.

mate...what amps are u planning on running??

If you're going to be seriously into competing in competitions or putting your car on show for hours, then there's really no point getting a $500 battery. Any standard lead acid battery from super cheap will serve you well. Just find one with a high CCA. Minimum for V6 magnas are like 320...or was it 420..can't remember, its in teh manual anyway. Standard 3rd gen V6 alternators are around 120A so they should be ok.

You won't need a dual battery set up unless you have a SERIOUS system. Even then you'd probably consider upgrading the alternator as well.

Anyway, if you have spare cash and don't want to spend it elsewhere, then by all means get a battery from optima. "Yellow top" seem to be the shizzle. Sealed, no maintainence, with a high CCA. Hell of a good reputation too. Won't be disappointed.

Seriously, batteries don't run amps - unless your trying to win some competitons with caps and battery banks your alternator is 110amps, which would even at night give you a good 60 amps to muck around with, a constant 60amp draw would provide enough current to deafen anyone, sure you'll get spikes above that but any battery is going to be able to cope with that, your stock battery will be most likely 400cold cranking amps, which means warm you'll have a ****load more so if you think your going to pull 400amps you better have a decent fuse.

Yeah... as has been said... The magna stock battery is great. See if you have any problems first, then make the decision once you've put it all in, you're unlikely to need an upgrade.

Other than that Optima, Odyssey and stinger...

Optima yellowtop if possible.

We got 2 amps in the camry and buuster makes sure it is doofing as loud as it can doof when ever she is in it, and we've had no probs so far :D

Is it really that big of an issue? i thought the battery only came into play when the car was off anyway...

I agree with Tim. Optima D34 all the way. For photos of them installed, look here (http://www.fastfoursforumscarclub.com/temp/fhrxstudios/photogallery_int.asp#interest8_4).:)

eek,

To answer your question I'll be running the front and rear speakers from the Jaycar Response 4X50WRMS AA0422 and have two 10" subs running from the Jaycar Response 2x150WRMS AA0424.
I've read a few articles and spoken to a few people and the Jaycar stuff has a good wrap for its price but if anyone knows of any better amps, then please do tell?

Better amps than Jaycar? Or better value for money than Jaycar?

Might be easier to name brands that are worse than Jaycar imo - Boss, Rockwood, Avalanche, Sony, Soundstorm, etc etc. Jaycar is essentially entry level gear, great value for money and definetly better than all the above brands. But when you look into the more mainstream brands (alpine, pioneer etc) and into the more premium brands (zapco, audison, trutech) It is a whole different kettle of fish.

In the end you get what you pay for.

At this stage I'll probably stick with the standard battery and as s_tim_ulate mentioned if I start having problems then I'll upgrade to the Optima D34 or similar. In regards to the amps I'm not going be to entering any competitions, just really after a crisp sound & thud.
The Jaycar amps provide good RMS ratings for their price ($200 - $300) and as a novice in car audio, I guess at this stage the entry level equipment will suit me fine for now. Once I get some experience up my sleeve then I'll start throwing more money at the setup.

Thanks for the advice,
Chris

for your proposed set up with the jaycar amps, you wouldn't need to upgrade your battery, however if you want to, it won't hurt.

Jaycar stuff is rrreally good in terms of value for money. But yeah, I like your train of though (mm, also the name of a good album my dream theater :P) anyhows, yeah, by all means feel free to upgrade later on!
