Hi guys,
Just installed new springs into my car, King lows all round, thanks to Baino!
They are starting to look great as they are settling in. The only thing is, after taking it for a test drive straight after, there is a slight knock, sometimes a rapid 2 or 3. Seems to happen randomly, not neccessarily whilst turning or going over a bump or whatnot.
Bain and i have thought about it and think it's just the springs settling in, but we would like to hear whether people with new springs experienced any noise whilst the springs bedded in?
Cheers :).

in my tp i had cronic noises after putting in the lower springs. sickening thunks when hitting bumps while turning or major weight shifts. i put it down to the same thing, springs bedding, cuz i got a mechanic mate to check it over and he said it was fine and it did get better. unfortunately i smashed it not long after so couldn't tell u if it went away completely.

i know bain knows whats he doing.. so it shouldn't be that the dowel holes don't line up.. or could it? dunno
i trust bain0 with this kinda **** and i doubt it'd be any of his doing or not doing..

Yeh we lined everything up right, sounds like it's coming from the rear, and it's only a small knock, not very loud at all. We hope it's just the springs bedding in, but not 100% sure.
Choonga when you first put springs in, did they make noises at all?

did you check that the rear springs were in firmly and that there was no gap between the strut top and the top plate? That causes knocking a lot of the time. You may have needed to put a washer in place to stop it.

Hmmm i assume Bain would have. I'll ask him.
But now i've noticed a recurring knocking sound that i dont likes. After accelerating, when i take my foot off the accelerator i get the rapid knock (kinda sounds like a thud too) coming from the front wheels. But heres the juicy part, the frequency of the rapid knock slows down and speeds up depending on speed, and when speed changes by more than 10km/h (of letting the car roll without acceleration) the knock goes away. I'll have to speak to Bain about that one, see what he says.

have u got hub caps???
i had a knocking/ticking for about 6 months and the dealer wouldn't fix it. kept saying the was nothing wrong. after i yelled and screamed and jumped up and down they replaced the cv. all was good...for 2 days then it was back much softer than be4. was zactly like u describe, rises and falls with speed and such. all it took was a young guy just out of his apprenticeship, who actually had some brains to work out the clip on the hub cap was busted and it was rattling against the wheel.
i nearly pissed myself laughing. they had the car for 5 whole days all up and spent hours going over it for something they could have fixed in 10min by proper deductive process.
neway, good luck finding it

Hey mate,
Ill give you a call after the wedding im going to, i have a few ideas of what it could be.

wen i put springs in a ralliart they did knock too its because the springs arnt in the saddle properly u will have to take back out the strut and reposition them

lol i helped him compress the springs and put the new springs in, but that was the limit of my knowledge on replacing springs :P.
I only just got new springs, not new shocks.
The springs were defineatly in firmly, took 2 people to get the top bits back on.
And to a response earlier, i have 17" alloy wheels.
Another surprise, took the car out for a short drive earlier, and the noise was almost completely gone  (slight knock randomly at random intervals of 30+seconds).

Ok guys just lettin you all know we have found the problem thanks to Bain. The new nuts for my mags that Tyrepower put on have stuffed up a couple of threads on the studs and is making the wheel come slightly loose. They're already fixing one of my studs on tuesday, but will get them to go through all of them.
Cheers to all those with ideas :).

Damn. That exact thing happened to me when I first got my car. I thought it was the CV's for a while, then the dealership took a look at it and realised the grease monkeys haden't even put ANY of the wheel nuts in their proper housing, and hence I was lucky none of my wheels flew off while driving! They replaced all 4 Ralliart rims genuine from Japan, $3000 later for them, not a cent for me.
sorry for hi-jacking the thread for a sec , but what is all this talk about the "springs settling"?
i have been worried about my front end because it is alot lower now than when i first got it lowered.
i was worried something had come loose or something and was going to take it back and get the place to look at it (need a hoist - too low to see myself :-).. ).
also it feels like it 'bottoms out' a bit too easily. could be the tyres hitting the guards tho.
do springs settle much lower generally? i think my front end is about 20mm lower than it was
after the lowering.

lol if your car is the one in your avatar, i can tell you why you are bottoming out lol.
Yes the springs will settle, when i first put the springs in it was still at stock ride height. Now they've dropped down to about where they should be, which was about a 20mm drop. As long as you're not getting any noises and the springs arn't dropping any further, you'll be right. What springs did you put in there?
lol if your car is the one in your avatar, i can tell you why you are bottoming out lol.
ha ha hah a:D the miracle of fotoshop
I believe they were lovells with monroe shockies. i didnt ask for any particular brand , i just said i didnt want any gap between the tyres and guards.
which was how it turned out, but now......

5 to 10mm is about the max.
If you push down on the front corner of your car, does the corner rebound quickly? or does it kind of bounce up and down a few times?
Going on your description of bottoming out and the extra lowering, youve either got stuffed shocks or your bump stops are trashed.

i had the exact problem as you described. not thinking it was the springs, i took it to a dealer. they removed the struts and reset the springs in the saddle properly.....knocking noise GOOOONE!!

Well turns out another 4 studs were threaded and stuffed. So there were 4 studs rooted on the front and 1 on the back (he didn't say which wheels, but i bet front left had at least 3.
Was all replaced for free :). Cars sweet now, no problems, yey!

yep it rebounds quickly ( not that i can push it that far down) and it doesnt bounce so i reckon the shockies are ok. they had bloody well better be , they are still only 6 months old or something.
bump stops trashed... not sure what they are .
there is a really really annoyingly bad spot on the freeway where they have joined two sections of a bridge together badly , leaving a raised lip across the whole road.
i swear it feels like driving over a kerb at 80kph with the lowered suspension.
do you reckon that would trash the bump stops or something?
im suprised no one has complained yet.
