First I'd like to partially appologize for putting sony products down. Not all products of theres are ****.

Speakers are quite clean and deep for bass when driven by the proper head unit.

After installing sony 6x9's in my GF's car with an alping 8950 HU, the sony speakers not amped are almost as clear and as loud as my JL's in my TH

However I remain unsure about Sony HU as I still dont think they are as clean as they could be

Does anyone know the distortion figure for the sony FX7700 or know where I can find the details on it. I know it has a signal to noise ratio of 120db@4V (more than my alpine at 105db@5V and my kenwood at 110db@5V)

Again I think hear sony out, might not be as **** as some think.

Anyone else found sony speakers to be good with a high quality HU such as Alpine?

All the headunits I've ever had have pretty much either been stock or Sony (4 in a row now).
I prefer my CDXF7700 to my friend's 9855, although the rest of his system isn't up to par with his HU. Also, I hate the user interface on Alpines.
Not saying they're the best but I've never had any problem with them and they suit me fine.
Not really bang for buck kind of products but I've never paid retail for them anyway.
Can't really comment on the rest of their car audio products, though. Most of their speakers and amps look a little too flashy for me.
If I were to get a different brand headunit, I'd probably go with Pioneer or JVC.

my FX7700 display stopped working, and I've had a lot of other sony products break on me. Although their discmans can take a beating ^_^

Alpine interface sux, but quality is definatley high in alpine

I had the impression sony head units are worth buying because they work quite well from experience, but their speakers aren't too good.

Sony discmans take a beating but their MD's are the biggest money waster.

I have a sony clock radio and it has worked fine for many years now. It was kind of special because it was the first clock radio I had in which the time would illuminate in green instead of red. I always had red, it was time for a change, and sony had the right product for me at the right time. So it's all worked out well thanks to sony. :D

I must say sony has more than enough capacity to make the best of everything, for some reason i feel their quality has been slipping. The sony stuff of the 90's used to be built like a rock.

buy a sony product if it's made in japan, the quality is so much better.

for example:

i have a sony tape walkman (one of the first with rewind!!), still works to this day. has taken a beating being at the bottom of my bag in primary school and highschool. made in japan.

our family only buys sony televisions... we have 4-5 in total... all made in japan, all have no problem.

i've had countless headphones, i just tend to distroy them from stepping on them or accidently melting the wire ($150 worth of earbud type headphones down the toilet with that one! ) once again, made in japan

clock radio, made in japan, nothing wrong... over 7 years old

2 x crt sony monitors, once again japan, no problems with them, both coming up for 8 years old.

i could rattle more sony products we own (haven't got to dvd home theatre equipment yet lol) but i think you get the idea... now having said that, i bought myself a cd walkman, made in malaysia... and the stupid thing broke... the buttons broke.

sony dvd-rom drive, malaysia, randomly stops working...

so from my general experience, if it's sony and it's still made in japan, it's good quality and will last ages. and yea the 90's stuff was great!

only place i dont have sony is my car (except 1 amp, a small sony 222w, has been treated like crap yet still kickass... you guessed it, japan! had this little thing powering my sub for ages... it's hit the thermal shutdown quite a lot in it's time lol)... i was given a pioneer sub as a pressie from my mates which started me off with car audio... so the rest of my system is pioneer... but myself, i probably would have got sony. not their cheapest stuff though.

Sony have stopped making Plasma tv's as they cannot build a competative display panel....

I've found the xplode 6x9's sound great, and 6/6.5's not too bad either. It's their subs that sound horrible.

In my camry my 12" non-ported sub sounded really nice and clean, gave the right amount of bass, and was compact, then my car smashed it self :P (acctually someone ran in the back of me)

As for the made in japan, your saying just look for the made in japan words and it's good?

To me sony is something I'm still concerned about but I think I may have just had my bad run of money with sony.

I would like to give them a chance and see one last time if they are good or not :)

Any other good/bad experiences?

was the sub a round sub or a pentagon one? The round ones were ok, still nothing special, the pentagon ones were horrible.
