I listen to alot of Rock (hard rock, metal), R'n'B and Rap so my ideal system would provide decent amount of mid bass and bass with balanced treble.
I was intending to replace the head unit with a sub $250 unit and replace front speakers with Jaycar 6 inch component speakers with 3 or 4 inch tweeters (to be mounted in dash pods) then down the track replace the rears with 6x9 (not sure whether to go triaxials or quads) and eventrually mount a smallish sub in the boot powered by a amp.
Does this sound like a good way to go? And can anyone reccomend some good brands to go for? Any ones to avoid?
And could I power the 2x tweeters, 2x6 inches and 2x 6x9s off the HU or would I need an amp by that stage?

i had been running my jaycar splits off my HU (alpine cda9855) for a while. combined with the stock rears it went quite well for an unamped system. reasonable midbass and fairly deep, but lacked real punch down low. i now have a jaycar 4x100wrms amp in as well and the splits go louder than i can handle for more than a few secs. i also have a pioneer 15" sub that should run well off the 360odd wrms bridged rear of that amp. putting it in a 2cft sealed box. should go ok and balance out the fronts.
Tim
PS if u get jaycar splits, mount the tweeters down low. i have them wired for -3db thru the crossover and the head unit has another -6db up high and they still seem quite harsh and overpowering mounted on the dash.

Some Jaycar splits up front powered by a 4x100 response amp would be pretty good for now.
Wouldn't bother too much with the rears. Maybe some cheap but decent 6x9's or just save your money.
Then when you get the sub you can run it bridged off the same amp.

Get the 4x100 amp, run the splits off the front and a sub off the back. Then run your 6x9's off the head unit. Make sure you get a decent deck though, get at least 4v pre-outs and you'll want at least 1 preout and 1 sub out.

you can, i think theyr 65 or 70 w rms.. so the headunit will be fine.. but amped would be better or course.
obviously if u want better sound get an amp. as the hu is only givin out maybe 20-25wrms?

Have a look at cashies...i bough a 4x50wrms jaycar amp for $45 there. ANd it works well. I run my front speakers with it. This way you can run fronts with it and also a sub. WIll sound better than running bass with 6x9 at the back.
Dont waste money on 6x9. Rather spend that on the sub/amp combo... Trust me, i thought the same way before. 6x9 are enough for me and need them for rear passengers. But after trying it, there is no point. As long as you have some good loud front speakers, it will keep the rear passengers happy. And the sub will take care of the bass

Cashies down here is an absolute rip off. They want $400 for an old outdated clarion amp that's only 4x100w rms.

im running a xplode 52wX4ch head with a cadiance 2ch 600w amp (around 200) and a pioneer 12inch 600w sub bridged, this setup cost me around 75 for the sub and box and a bit extra for speakers, im happy with it and would recomend
cadeance amps (good value)
and pioneer (excelent doff doff)
all this was at jb hi-fi, and if you buy at once you should get about 30% off,
