As said, it all depends on the quality of the tyres.

Lucky he is driving a family car and not a performance car then.:bowrofl:

hehe doesnt matter the car.
He definetely wants good tyres for a FWD.. Id hate to be driving in the wet on some of those crappy hard compound tyres they stick with packages these days.
To the OP: If you are hard up on cash, look at maybe some of the Toyo or Hancook range. They will be around $250 - $300 a 19" tyre.
Or you could go 18 inch rims that will have a better ride quality and allow you to get alot better quality tyres..
Besides brakes, the next most important thing is tyres..

honestly i wouldn't expect the rims to be more than $300-350 each, so $1200-1400 of the total price, which leaves about $1000 for the tyres, so 250 each a tyre is pretty cheap. i would find out how much the next decent tyre would be, nothing crazy, but not Nankang :D

Make sure the guy is gving you the right load rating tyre mate. The first tyre place I went to (Quick Fit) quoted me for 19's and ROH Fury rims, then I went to Bob Jane and discovered the rubber Quick Fit quoted me weren't the right load rating, and hence would've voided my insurance. If I was you i'd go with 18's and get some good rubber like MAXXIS MAZ-1 or something.

I think going 18"s would be a better option, 35 profile rubber is not that good an idea, handling usualy gets worse once you drop below 40-45 and the tyres will be cheaper on 18"s not to mention you can get 7.5"s wide which is still legal for most insurance companys...

Speaking of decent 18" tyres.. I got quoted $320ea for Toyo Proxes 4. It's got a 95 load rating and Y for speed. Every review of it I've come across rates it pretty well.

i'm actually using Toyo Tranpath SW, 235x40ZR18, 95W

i'm pretty sure these can be had for about $220 a tyre, and are suprisingly good! Toyo are definately making some value for money tyres from what i've seen so far!
although those proxes 4 do have a very sexy tread pattern!
