Hey guys,

had my VRX for about 6 months, done about 83k kms in it.
i filled up last week and my fuel gauge moved correctly til about 100ks
and then it would drop slowly each time the car was on.

for eg 100ks normal - 3/4 tank gone in 30ks.

needle is now sitting below empty despite still being able to drive round.

i did a search and found it maybe the fuel sender unit.

just wanted a 2nd (or more) opinion on it and if there maybe anything to fix it up (seems like there isn't) at home??

cheers guys.

Liam.

EDIT: 1st post!! huzzah!!

Most likely the fuel sender. A lot of TJ's have had this replaced.

Nothing is on the government recalls site.

Yeah mine is stuffed too. Everytime i fill up it goes to empty. After about 50kays it starts reading correctly till im empty. Next Refill it will either go to full or empty. Plays havoc with the trip computer as well till it settles again. Keep an eye on your odometer in case you run out of fuel. I tend to fill it when the fuel light comes on. If it is a recall item someone post some info on it. Im willing to hit up mitsu for a new one if this is the case. Im sure this would be an expensive item to replace. Was going to have a crack at it but getting that fuel line off is a pain in the butt. 3 attempts so far and the thing wont come off.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but how much am I looking at for a new fuel sender? Put $80 in last night, and its reading as empty.

As long as you know how far you can get on a tank you shouldnt really need to worry about the gauge. I know i get 500 and then 80 more, never look at my gauge, they are never all that accurate anyway. I know a commo thats had the gauge pulled and replaced it with the boost gauge for the turbo.

Unless its really bothering you its not threatening to the car.
I think the unit is $110. Not sure, dont quote me.

Hmm, I'd still like to have a rough idea of where I'm sitting. But $110 aint so bad at all! Cheers matey

$70-$80 part from Mitsubishi. DIY in 20 mins or 1hr labour at any competent mechanic.

Driving without a working fuel gauge is pretty silly. Lots of reasons to get it fixed... fuel tank might get a hole etc. I mean for $80 it's worth the peace of mind.

Yeah exactly my thoughts man, I mean even running the tank completely empty could cause a few headaches (and its a long walk to the servo).

I'll ring Mitsu on Monday and get it sorted.

They're $71... I might a step by step post somewhere how to put it in as well, don't pay for the hours labour.

I should be able to manage it, but a guide would probably speed up the process, cheers man!

And these fuel senders are getting cheaper with every post! I'm lovin it!

My new gadget arrives tommorrow... I haven't looked at anything yet, but am I right in thinking that I've got a pull the back seat off, unscrew that lil hatch and replace the gizmo there?

Now, this might seem like a silly question, but are the fuel light and fuel gauge controlled by different mechanisms?

Because my fuel light has just been coming on, yet the gauge is stuck at zero...

...it got me thinking, perhaps just the needle could be stuck? Or will the fuel light continue to work even with a busted fuel sender?

Light and gauge are the same deal. Once the gauge hits zero the light will come on. Replace the fuel sender and both are fixed.

Oh... but my fuel light didn't come on until yesterday... and it came on like it usually does, it flashes under acceleration, then goes away, then comes back and stays on when the tank is emptier. A fair indication that its working fine...

The gauge has been sitting on empty since last Friday however, and hasnt budged at all.

SO... does this mean its not my fuel sender thats ****ed? The needle couldnt be stuck, could it?

Cause I'll feel like a tool if it is.

If you have a gregorys/haynes manual and a multimeter you can test it before you replace it if you like. They're just a variable resistor and they change between two values when the tank is empty/full. When its busted the value for full still stays the same but it goes way off the scale when the fuel level starts to drop at all, hence when it goes from full to empty in about 6 litres.

If I had 70 bucks in my paypal I'd bet you that it's your fuel sender. If you want the resistance I can go look them up.

Fuel sender it was!

I just about murdered that clip, but luckily it jumped off before I pulled the trigger.

Haha, and there was a ****load of fuel in the lines when I took it off, under pressure, so it kind of squirted me.

:bowrofl:

So I'm a stinky, angry man, but at least I can see how much fuel I have again! Cheers piv, your a champ matey.
