Hey guys, went out today to get a quote on the car and ended up getting a Simota Air Filter.
The part where you attach it to the piping is 7.5 cm wide, the base is 9cm wide. The air filter itself is 13cm long by 18cm wide at the base and 12cm wide at the top.
Now I need help installing this - Was told that the filter should just bolt straight on but it looks as if I'd need to take off the MAF sensor which 1. Looks Tricky, 2. I've heard can cause problems, 3. the part where the box meets the MAF sensor looks to be oval shaped and the one on my filter is round.
Would it be possible to grab an adaptor plate, screw that to the inside of the existing filter box and screw it in there? Would I need to remove the box itself and fit the adaptor plate onto the sensor? Is this too difficult for a noob like me to do?
Unless one of you guys near me could help me out?

I'm planning to keep the factory air intake on there - figure its gotta be better than no cold air directed to it.

You cannot take the MAS sensor off. Your car will not run properly and you will go into limp home mode. You will need an adaptor plate and you may run into problems with your idle.

Yep, better off sticking to the proven filters that have half a million threads about them on here. Either the oval one designed to stop the "swirling" that plays havoc with the MAS or a panel filter.

whats the exact model\part number for the K&N pod?
K&N 63-1500 Air Charger Kit - Mitsubishi/Proton. This kit includes the mitsu specific oval pod filter plus maf adapter plate.
Search feature is your friend :D
Best bet is to get it through Philcom simply because you are not likely to find a better price on it anywhere else. Also because some stores claim that K&N don't MAKE an oval pod.

Well got back from the place where I bought the filter from...
****ers say that unless there's something faulty with the filter - I can't return it. I'll be going back in on Tuesday to say that I had gotten the thing fitted with a Repco adaptor plate and that it caused - rough idle, messed with MAS, decreased fuel economy (can't get much more faulty than all of that).
I'd reccomend to anyone in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne never to shop from Cyber Century Car Accessories in Springvale.
Definitely getting the K&N pod now :)

Did they tell you it should just bolt straight on after you informed them that you had a magna?
If so, then they HAVE to give you your money back (or at least store credit), because the product didn't perform as they said it would. I think there's something in the Sale of Goods Act that covers it if htey wanna get ****ty at you.

They kept insisting it was universal. I asked if they had a adaptor plate - they said I don't need one.

Then just tell em an entire club full of Magna owners told them that they have no idea what they're on about, try to get your money back.

If they've sold it to you on the premis that it's a "universal" design which can fit any car without modification, or puchasing additional fittings - then I would think you have right to return it under the fair trading act.
If they don't believe you - show take one of them out to your car and show them the MAF sensor and ask how excatly they propose you fit it without an adaptor plate.
If you let them know that you know your rights as a consumer (eg: they claimed it would fit a magna, and it doesn't - therefore the product doesn't meet the requirements under which it was purchased), and mention the ACCC - and they should give you a credit just to avoid the hassle.
