View Full Version : Squeeky sounds from the rear wheels.
Hey guys, when I start driving the car I can hear a gentle squeek that comes from the rear wheels, Im not sure what it is.
I thought I was running out of brake pads. But I've got them changed now and the squeek is still present and its quite annoying.
Does anyone know whats going on?
Thanks!

Could be the handbrake.. does it go away if you pull on the handbrake lever gently?

Good luck with this...
Mum's TJ has been doing this for ages. Been to Mitsu 4 times and still does it. The entire handbrake assembly was cleaned out adn god knows what else but it still does it.

I had this problem in my TE not long after I bought it, I did everything to fix it, handbrake adjustments, new pads and machined discs (needed doing anyway) this stopped it and it never did it again.
I was told if it continued the entire handbrake assembly might need to be replaced.
Hmm, I should give that handbrake thing a go.
But the problem is... My handbrake is screwed. I have to click it on the last teeth for it to gently hold the rear wheels. Anyone know how I can fix the handbrake while Im at it?
Besides purchasing the new cables?
Cheers
I also have this prob, ive been told its the handbrake too.

Ask for the revised handbrake shoes to be fitted. This fixes the problem.

Hey Te96 ! ]
Try the hand brake first like pull it on and if it goes away while its pulled on great its the hand brake pads !
But id it doesnt then touch the foot brake and if the squeek goes away while you have your foot on the brake then its the pads !
If its still there when you have the hand brake on and or the foot brake on then it may be the tyres.
In a case of my mates subaru the wheel trims pressed in against the bead on the tyre and made squeeking nioses ! lol
Drove him nuts until for months as he thought it was the tyres and then the pads until the mechanic found what it was !

Or remember to take the handbreak off... trust me, my gf did that once thank god only for a short distance. I thought something trully stuffed on the car to make that noise, untill my gf "forgot" to release the hand break.

Te96,
I also have a 96 TE and i have the same prob, it is most definately the handbrake rubbing lightly. Try and jerk the handbrake a couple of times and it should stop doing it.
As far as adjusting the handbrake, there are two places you can do it. One is inside the centre console (pull out the tub inside the centre console and you will see 2 cables, there is a nut that you can tighten to adjust tension), it will adjust the cable tension on both sides and the other is an individual adjustment on the rear brake assembly. Take your wheel off and on the disc rotor there will be a hole, sometimes has a rubber plug covering it, turn the rotor around so that the hole is around 12 o clock. inside there will be a small adjusting gear/cog that you can use a screwdriver to turn, to adjust the pad closer to the drum.
Good luck.
Also what is the story with the revised handbrake pads, what is different. I would love to fix the problem once and for all. Thanks in advance guys.

Alright guys,
Before I had no handbrake, I then adjusted the bolt in the center console and that helped amazingly. Before there was no tension. I still hadn't checked the adjustments made at the rear wheels though.
My handbrake is really stiff now, but I still hear the squeeky noise. What actually pisses me off now is when I step on the brakes it squeeks like hell. I know it could be just crap thats between the rotor and pads but wouldn't it go away by the time I stop the car a couple of times? (its comming from a few wheels)
Cheers and many thanks for the replies guys.

Hey Guys !
Do not over tighten your hand brake as it will constantly rub !
This is a big mistake !
It should go a long the way up before locking the brakes !
