Hi mate.

I am HOPELESS with directions, so last year I bought myself a GPS System. I looked at the in car GPS computers with DIN screen and such but it was like $4k for a decent system.

For $700 I picked up a Navman PIN 570

Its a PDA with an attached GPS reciever and GPS software on it. You mount it to your windshield and it plugs into the cigarete lighter. It provides a live colour Map, voice instructions, route planning and auto re routing etc. Its very handy, ive used it many times. No system is perfect, but they are very handy.

I got GPS on my pda too.

I love my pda. You can do everything with it.

The portable systems now are reasonably cheaper than built in systems and the beauty is, you can take them with you, whatever car you're in.

My dad uses mine when he needs it, and if i ever sell my car, i can just take it with me quite easily.

Got a Navman myself, forgot what model. Takes a little while to get used to driving with it, but definitely good to have.

Yeah the main thing is to realise they arent perfect.

Especially on Round-A-Bouts.

Trick is, look at the map, dont rely on the voice instructions so much.
But the map highlights all the turns anyway so its all good.

I use my laptop with a usb gps ($100), laptop sits behind the drivers seat and plugs into the front indash 7" monitor. the program is copilot 8 ($4~$500) and been good to use. love not caring about getting lost or where i'm going, saves arguing with the mrs to :D
