hey guys,

Just went down to the local exhaust center this morning to get some recommendation on upgrading the exhaust system.

I was told by the guy that i should only go for a 2.25" piping instead of 2.5" because my car is only a 3.0 L engine and it's automatic.

He said if i go for a 2.25" with a Lukey LR2779, i can run at least 80km more in 1 full tank of fuel.

however, if i go for a 2.5", i will only use more fuel and will lose torque as well.

what do u guys think?
Also, he said it will cost me about $420 for that piping and Lukey muffler. Is that reasonable?

I was under the impression your car came with 2.25" standard?
$420 if installed as well is an ok price, but make sure you are actually upgrading your exhaust.

My exhaust was a custom job, 2 1/2" from the cat back with a 3" tip and it was only $410, you'd think it would be a bit cheaper for 1/4 inch smaller wouldn't you?

Why?
It's still the same amount of work to do it.

i think you should go for the 2.5' cause i doubt just changing brand would make a difference

for the 3.0L v6 the 2.5" has appeared to be more effective in giving power compared to the 2.25", thats just from memory

go to another exhaust place and get a second opinion and/or quote.

Megatron has 3" piping on his 3l Magna, and it pulls quite hard. Better than the 2.5" piping he had previously. But he does have extractors... either way... go for the 2.5".

Magna's already come with 2.25" piping anyways

I have a 2.5" pipe on mine from the cat back.
was a definate improvement.
cant remember the cost - was about 460?
D&T exhaust in myaree. pricey but good.

from what ive read on this forum 2.25" is standard.

i drive a 95 2.6l TS..im looking at getting 2.5" from a high flow cat back, but im still unsure as to what kind of muffler im after...alot of people are saying to just get a straight through muffler..but from what ive heard there are better styles out there that sound much better and provide better performance gains...anyone got any opinions on styles of mufflers and a ball park figure on what it would cost with my planned setup?

I had 2.5" piping put in my 3L. I notice more cabin drone.
3.0L came with 2.25" with Mandrel Bends
3.5L came with 2.5" with Mandrel bends.

My new piping has press bends, but doesn't concern me. Piping was cracked as it was from my 4WDing efforts.

I doubt the 3.5L came with 2.5" standard. I'm sure it's still just 2.25"

Nope, it's neither but it's closer to 2.5' than 2.25'. The piping size between the 3.0 and 3.5 definately went up. According to MMAL, it's 60.5mm.

Ahhh, so going from 2.4 to 2.5 is pointless?
That might be where that other dude got 2.4 inch exhaust from, interesting

Depends on your point of view. I don't think the cost warrents it.

if its a 2.6L get the 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust as this has shown the greatest gains for the model

does the redback muffler bolt on? I'm thinking of just buying one of them.

You have mandrel and press bends.. in a mandrel bent pipe, something (a mandrel) is kept inside the pipe to retain the pipe cavity size during the bending process. With a press bend, the pipe is just bent so the shape of the pipe deforms. The sharper the bend the greater the deformation.

thankyou for clearing that up :P so im guessing press bend is bad, mandrel good?

Generally speaking, yeah.. specifically it depends on how sharp your bends are. I don't know the numbers, but you might get 5-10% less flow through a 90 deg press bend. I think Autospeed did an article once comparing the two... might try and look it up.

press bent is fine for a street car and much better value than mandrel (unless you have had a lot of head work done or forced induction). id definatly go no higher than 2.25 inch for the 2.6L

ok thanks for that..is there any prefered style of muffler that is preffered with each system? eg. straight through on a mandrel bent 2,25 or a canon for press bends etc etc

Sorry for the thread hijack:redface: but at least its information we can all benifit from :D

Nah, the muffler is all about personal preference. Straight through is always a good idea.. and canons are just a type of straight through - the kind with basically no muffling ability lol

Straight through is the way to go with the magna, that's what free's up the juice from the exhaust the most. Depending on which straight through you get, depends on exhaust note and loudness. Cannon obviously being loud lol.

is there any brand of straight through muffler that people would reccomend/warn against? im currently looking at a twin out straight through muffler, cant remember the brand name, i thik it was walker or something like that, but the guy said it was the brand used in the v8 supercars (ringing a bell anyone?)..he can do it for 210 fitted, with tips. thats not includng new piping and hi flow cat tho
