im just wondering if any of you sydney siders know a place that fixes drivers seat belts? the seat belt in Hiace van is all loose now (i think somehting is broken off after the impact of a crash?) I went to mechanics, they told me to try the wreckers, but the problem is i dont really know how to assemble them etc... even if i bought the thing from a wrecker.

Hey TFBoy !
The seat belts are a sealed unit type !
What you do is go to the wreckers and they will have one for you !
You just replace the whole thing including the seat belt !
There is one or two bolts in the bottom along side the seat which holds the automatic seat belt retractor devise, and another bolt up by your shoulder to hold the swivil bit to the side of the car ! (You do not open up the auto retractor devise)
a couple a three bolts and... done !

I don't want to rain on your party, so to speak, but seat belts are like brakes, tyres and lights, they are all a type of "insurance" against the risk of you hitting something. In the seat belt case it would be you against the interior, or worse still, the windscreen and the outside world.

Inertia reel seat belts aren't expensive (certainly not when compared to your life).

The main thing to be aware of is the buckle stalk length. Just buy a new replacement unit from your auto parts store (Repco, Autobarn etc), making sure that the stalk length is the same and that the mounting bolt location on the reel is the same. There are typically three bolts to remove and replace the entire setup (inertia reel, belt and buckle).

I'd toss that accident damaged belt into the nearest rubbish bin.

just though id add it's aggainst(spelling bad) the law to put in second hand seatbelts and u can get defected for it if they see em. just because it's a big safety issue and i guess ur life is in the hands of the seat belt. couple of years back i was putting an old falcon on the road and had swapped 2 broken seat belts with a parts cars, same model, year and make . well they wouldn't pass me for rwc cause the original belts had been replaced with second hand ones . well im in queensland so im not sure about the other states.

Hey Smooth2 !

They would not know if they where or where not seat belts from the original car unless you informed them ?
Its not like they have a vin number on them !
The part numbers from model to model can be the same over many years aswell !
They will however ensure the belts are not cut or chffed for saftey reason !

thnx for the reply guys,

its actually my dads van, but i drive it sometimes thats why i notice it, and its not the belt, its the entire unit, (the clip in are really loose - moves and will come loose if you bend the cushion of the seat) scary huh? on second thoughts i wont buy from wreckers for sure! (good point) i will have a look at the auto shop soon, but what im hoping to find is a place that actually do them and install them? like drive in drive out:) i know it'll cost a bit more, but then my dad can find a time and go do them, as i got uni exams all that these few days

Your mechanic will probably do it on a drive in, drive out arrangement. Otherwise the dealer will certainly do it.
