Has anyone noticed that the Police have begun to drive Magna. I have seen 2 in Sydney, 1 in Campbelltown. Anyone know what mods they do out of curiosity?

In NSW they have been using standard Magna's for ages in small amounts, as well as some Camrys. They use them as general duties/detectives vehicles etc, but not as Highway Patrol. Lately there have been heaps more around though, mostly AWD VRX's. Apparently the Police are/were extremely impressed with the AWD VRX's, and ordered heaps more after the original trial order, and are very disappointed they are no longer in production!! Think this shows how underrated the AWD models are by most people. Its a pity more people didnt sample them as the Police did, think sales would have been huge!

Apparently their Fleet operator got a very very good deal on them, when Mitsubishi was doing it tough sales wise....which I'd say means that 380's will start to appear soon, with its current poor sales performance.
As always if only more people would test drive them......

I hear what your saying but the radical change to the tear drop shaped front head lights cause the drop in sales !
I think they should have kept the old shape instead of butchering a good product !
When they moved to the 380 as they did change the look entirly like when they changed from the 1st 2nd and 3rd Gen !
The change to the head lights was a poor change just like when Ford first changed to the radical front look of the BA's grill and lights (I think it was the BA) and their sales plummetid also !
People in general dont like huge changes !

Thats my 2 bobs worth !

but not as Highway Patrol.

Sorry mate, wrong there, some unmarked VRX AWD are used. Ku Ring Gai had one about 10 months ago driving around with a red P Plate. Bit of bait and lure there.

Not wrong.
Checked with mate at fleet. (buys these cars for the NSW Police)_ The only cars that currently meet the standard for NSW Highway patrol work are the XR8/6T and SS. These are the only cars used. After the trouble they had with WRX's that were trialed a few years back, they will only use those two for now. Maybe other states different though, I know the ACT had WRX's, and a AWD Volvo turbo for a while, but think they have also reverted to SS and XR8/6T only policy. As for putting a P plate on them, its an offence under Australian road rules so doubt they would be using that!!!
And I agree that the Headlight treatment that the TL/TW got, was very ordinary to say the least. But head office in Japan overuled what MMAL wanted, and the rest is history now.
Doesnt take away that the AWD model in particular is a great drive, and underrated.

In NSW they use both undrcover and stickered Magna AWD's as Highway patrol cars.

(a mate of mine is in the police force was telling me about it)

I have seen a fully marked TL/TW VRX AWD with a roof light bar many times on the central coast and the F3. I think it's based at Brisbane Water police station but don't quote me on that. I just seem to see it in the Gosford City and F3 areas.

I often see it cruising the coast but the most notable sighting include:

- As was heading towards Brooks Hill (Wamberal) on the way home one night, it approached in the opposite direction, braked hard then proceded to do a u-turn. I slowed down and waited then floored after it as it powered off hard up Brooks Hill then took a left at Serpentine Rd where I lost it as I was not heading that way home. I can only assume it was responding to an urgent radio call.

- The second was on the F3 one morning a couple months ago on the way to work. It was about 500m ahead of me on the 3 lane smooth section before Mt White. I was in the very most left lane and it was in the middle lane. Suddenly, it swerved into my lane (but was way up ahead) and hit the gas. At Mt White, I saw it on the side of the road after pulling someone over.

- It passed me this morning following a marked BA XR8 whilst I was waiting at the Wahroonga traffic bank up.

One of my mates is a highway patrol officer in inner western sydney, he was using an unmarked TJ as a highway patrol car back around 2003.

I think you'll find that your mate might be looking at what's defined as a pursuit vehicle - any LAC can use whatever vehicles they want for traffic duty, however each vehicle falls within a certain category whereby they must terminate a high speed pursuit.

You didnt mention the xr6t- they have them everywhere within Sydney.

Their allowed to - it's not an offense under the NSW traffic act. Go and have a look at the various threads on FFAU.

And some randoms getting nicked by unmarked awds: http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:WrYMKyUw-jwJ:pforums.company-hosting.com/forums/printthread.php%3Ft%3D67184285+%2Bpolice+%2Bmagna+-carta+%2Bunmarked&hl=en&gl=au&ct=clnk&cd=2&client=firefox-a

But NSW doesn't have a traffic act - not since before 1999.

I think you mean the Road Transport (Driver Licensing) Regulation 1999, Section 15 & 15A

This section states what is required of Provisional Drivers in regards to the displaying of "P" Plates on their vehicles. Their is no provision for displaying "P" plates by persons not on a provisional licence.

However: Police even if the officer is on their P's do not have to display P plates, this exemption is from the same act, but Section 15A Subsection (5), and only relates to Green P's or Provisional P2 drivers only.

And as for your description of Pursuit vehicles, New South Wales Police have 4 catergory of Vehicle simple 1, 2, 3, & 4. no "Pursuit Vehicles" listed in their. Their is a policy as to vehicles and who they are driven by and what they are used for.

A highway Patrol car may be a category 2 Vehicle compared to a general duties commodore sedan which is category 1. It is quite confucing and can't be simplified to a pursuit vehicle or not.

Thats what I was getting at. SOP procedure though in a chase I have been informed is where possible to give preference to the marked highway cars - and pretty obvious, but the highway guys will/should have the top level police vehicle licence.

Yes you are right - However a fully marked Police sedan will be a category 1 Vehicle. an Unmarked Highway patrol car will be a category 2 Vehicle.

As for the traffic Act, they got rid of 1 act in 1999 and replaced it with about 10 different Acts - theres politicians for ya!

Yeah, a couple of years ago.

Only mods a Magna will get are stickers and their gear. Don't know if Mitsu have an equivalent to a Police pack.

Some one here has a pdf of the TJ Magna Police flyer. As with all Police vehicles it is simply a group of certain options aimed at increased durability and safety. There is no such thing as a police chip or engine for any Australian police vehicle. Anyone who says there is such a thing is a liar. Like wise Police modifying the cars beyond emergency/comms equipment. Not anymore. Oh and the ACT police have a couple of 380s. The drug and traffic squads loved the old TH 3.5 Execs as undercover pursuit cars. Cashmere seemed to be very popular.

Just though they may have got a general chip or reprogrammed the ECU yeah I know the myth about the Police chip. LOL

Yeh in perth they mostly have the commodores as normal patrol vehicles and also as highway patrol units. However there has been incidents where i've seen BA Falcon paddy wagons.
