View Full Version : Getting A 1996 TE executive what are soome good first mods
I am shortly about to get 1996 TE EXECUTIVE and was wondering what a good first mod would be.
Im still in school and thus don't have alot of money. I was looking at performance and looks mods but have no idea where to start.
P.S TBuTcher where did you get your bonnet and how much did it cost?

1. 2.5" Lukey straight through muffler. Mine was $200 fitted, inc tip.
2. Lowering, New King Springs, ~$400 - won't give you more power, but will sure let you take corners faster. Then again, no offencse intended, being at school, you've only just got your P's? Might be a good idea not to try cornering fast until you've gotten used to driving. :D Really does make the car a lot more stable. (and better at scraping on things :()
3. K&N Panel Filter. ~$130
Then Extractors. But that's upwards of $500.
And I'd probably hold off on new wheels until you've mastered parallel parking. Scratching the left front wheel is so easy when your new at it :( (again no offense or anything)
TBuTcher made is own bonnet - absolute master piece! I'm sure he'll give you the run down on it :)

driver put it in a nut shell for you!
One you've done those mods and you're ready to start messing with the handling/stability of the car. Don't forget strut braces.. they help quite a bit, definetely suggest getting a front and rear strut brace!
Mitsiman works at RPW in Perth and he sells all of that stuff.
Also another mod, now that RPW was mentioned. HiFlow Throttle Bodies, they machine your throttle body in such a way that it doesn't mess with any other components and doesnt set ya computer off to go haywire. Thats my limited knowledge of engines/mechanical components etc. But its definetely worth looking and seeing what other people have done and what gains they have made from different setups. eg. Redav has a Lukey Muffler and a K&N Panel and he kicked some 3.5s on the dyno. Thats top-end though, don't rush into making any decisions that will cost you money and be in-effective.

Redev's car - in stock form - still did quite well though! (He unbolted the muffler/panel and did another run as stock)

just cut ya springs....that will save u money! weld a metal bar from strut to strut and that will stiffn the front end up nicely for drifting those hard to drift corners! hehe
*this is a joke...if you really take this advice then u have problems. hehe

Problem with the above post is that ppl do cut springs then end up wrapped around a tree or another car when the front end falls out.

P platter + mods = cop bait
i'd suggest you get some ice, prolly spring, and leave any performance mods until you can really handle the car. stock magna isn't that bad in term of performance
just my 2c....

So what if its cop bait.. as long as you don't do anything stupid.. whether cop bait or not, let them check your car for defects.. no need to worry because you havent got any defects. Not having a go at MagnaBishi or anything.. Just wanna make sure you don't do any stupid/illegal mods that will make ur vehicle defectable!

Thanks for the feedback.
I don't really car if in cop bait, I will do everything legally and they will only be wasting time searching my car for defects.
What kind of difference can I expect to see for K&N?
And does anyone know how much a decent set of rear and side lights cost(liek the once in the DIY section)?
I might also add that it's the 3L not the 2.4L

K&N, if my knowledge serves me correctly.. should give you a free-er feeling in the rev range and give you a very negligible increase in power! A very worthy mod as it works great with other mods that you progress to install in the car!

Yeah, seems I got lucky. :) - whoohoo
The panel will free up the air flow which is probably only noticeable in the high range but I'd doubt it's measurable on a dyno. It's about removing restrictions and is just a mod that's usually one of the first to do as other mods will demend this in the end.

in WA cops are targeting modofied cars, after the accident last 2 weeks(a highly modifiend IS 200 crashed and burned killing the 2 passengers not the driver), so now for the 6 6 months or so, police are targetting modified cars and young drivers. i'm just telling you to be carefu and not doing anything stoopid.. :D

Clear rear taillights will set you back $220. email blake for details blake@aussiemagna.com
and u can pick up some VT side indicators usually from wreckers etc. or go VT Commo hunting hehehe  [jokes]
otherwise u can order genuine, but you could be looking at up to $75 for a set
good luck

no offence to Tiphareth but i cant understand why people are still recommending using the commodore side indicators which have to be slightly altered when the new lancers have clear indicators which just happen to be exactly the same as the orange ones on the magna range.
Tiphareth

thats true. Just obviously a cheaper alternative. whereas lancer indicators are prolyl about $40 and genune magna ones from ozeparts.com are $55. so take your pick. and depending on what car you have, u may not need to alter ur car. Manual apparently fitted his right on (to his TH)

Yea, when I fitted them to my TE I just filled back the grove on the back of the light a little to make it a bit deeper and then they just clicked straight in.

Yea I got to agree with Madmagna on this one.
Just last year three people were killed in an accident near my place for just this reason. The driver of the car was cruising down a hill at about 140 (maybe 150), bottomed out on the springs he'd cut himself. The car came down on the skid plates hard at the bottom of the hill and was thrown into the air. Slid sideways UP HILL for about 120m and snapped a telegraph pole off at it's base. The fact they were waring seatbelts didn't even help them, as one of the occupant's seatbelt snapped in half :(

Really, one should always improve the handling first, learn how the car behaves and then add on with power mods.
150 km/h to a pole.... Ouch! Impact like that messes one's internal organs to a big pot of jelly. Want me to send some pics? No? Ok, thought so.
But what comes to mods and how much they add power (estimations)
K&N - some kWs, mainly on higher revs.
CAI - ditto, should affect all rev area if properly constructed.
Dump (muffler) - 5-10 kW
Headers - 5-15 kW
TB - some kW, but mainly response effect.
All air intake/output mods work together, improve each other.
Anything more than this and you start to spend big bucks - which, if I understood correctly, you don't have to much.
But there are more to mod of course - endless...
Hope this helps.

ok dose any one know if the tj clear tail lights will fit the te magna or how much are these te clear ones im in badly deeply ineed of them
Redav

There are white tail lights available for TE-TH, don't think there are any that match the TJ design. And they are white, not clear. Plus you need to make them ADR compliant.
Tiphareth

Redav is corrct. There is no "clear taillights" for the TJ models but the clear taillights that are available suit the TE - TH range. but apparently may fit the TJ, but looks wrong :? .

Thanks for the help.
If i get clear rear lights will I have to get special clearance or anything? Can i just slap them in and drive around no problems?
Currently im looking @ getting rear lights, side light, Filter in that order.

If your going to put clear rear lights on your car, you will need to put some red reflectors on the left and right rear end (i.e on the light itself or on the rear bumper) or you will end up getting booked by the cops :(

As for fitting a TJ. I'm sure they will fit except the profile is different from a TE-TH to a TJ. The TJ has a smooth curved face whereas the others have crease halfway down.
