is it illegal to remove you rear muffler and just weld a pipe on?
is sound the only issue.
Seems like this would be a lot cheaper than a sports muffler, and would probably sound sweet. (it did on my mate's vl and mx6)

WHY? is it purely the sound level.
isn't a cannon just a hollow bit of piping anyway?
exuse my ignorance.

Dont quote me on this, but i'm sure the ADR (Australian Design Rules) for cars state that it must have a muffler.
And yes the sounds levels will no doubt be illegal, and yes a cannon is pretty much a straight pipe, but it still muffles some sound (look inside you'll see little holes). Though you'll most likely find cannons are over the noise limit too.

the tn my dad use to own dropped its muffler by itself lol , (so you can also use this excuse if the cops get you) and it does make a pretty nice sound hehe, but your neighbours wont like you if you need to use your car late/early. also i think we found that there is a drop performance wise.

Its also illegal to get a new exhaust system from the cat back.

Really? That can't be Right... i have replace both mid pipe and rear muffler (= cat back exhaust) and haven't had a problem...
or do you only mean if u get a modified one?
what about passing it at a rego check? or do i need to "know" somebody to pass it...

There's apparently no need to modify cat back, unless your really pressing for every HP (and this means having big engine mods first!). I was told that the best mod for street use, is simply using the Lukey muffler (LR227, or something?) I did this and found great increase in performance and economy, although not right away. The smoothness of the magna compared to commodore hid the performane gains a bit. But then when you start to give it a kick in the guts, you can really feel it. sound levels are really low too, but with a great note that makes it sound like a real car, rather than a silent fart!

If ypu wanna get that technical then every mod on your car that isnt factory is illegal..:P
lol yes it is very illegal.
I didnt think it was.. the car still has the front muffler.. it will be very noisy though as the magna has a small front muffler and a very large rear muffler to eat up all the noise.. the mistake people do it put a small replacement muffler down the back and its hell noisy.. they use the large rear muffler to kill all the noise..
The only drama you will have is it will be crazy loud..:P I woulnt do it..:P

Apparently, the lukey is the same muffler used on the sports vrx (I could be misinformed) and tha's the only difference between the two, performance wise there's 8 KW. Seems to be a real proven gain.

thanks guys.
im going to find out if the exhaust places that i went to (200 for a sports muffler fitted) are going to simply cut off the stock muffler and weld a new one on, or replace the exhaust from just behind the rear axel.
If they are going to do the latter, ill give it a go, since it will be removed anyway.

I'm after a bolt on muffler for my TJII EXEC. Something straight through. I was thinking of just getting a redback, but not sure on lukey? Are these 2 bolt on? Cost should be roughly what installed?
I was hoping to pay < $200

well, i went to three places for quotes yesterday. All were exactly 200 fitted. So i guess with a hand full of cash and some bargaining you should be able to pay under 180.
But im not sure if these are welded on or if they are bolted in front of the rear axel????

just found out that the quotes for 200 were welded.

Hey Kugzs !
I just jumped to the end of the thread here and thought I just say I have a front to rear sports exhaust including extractors steel cat and 2.5" exhaust tube with 2 straight thu mufflers all fitted drive in drive out for $1,440.
The rear muffler on the magnas are tight but the next biggest restriction is in the standard manifolds where they all meet 6 into 1 on the curve at the front of the exhaust !
The exhaust place cut one open while I was there and there is a restrictor in the bend !
so yes you will get heaps more noise without the rear muffler but not a huge gain in performance because of the front pipe restriction !
I also had a unichip fitted and a K&N panel filter but the single biggest gain in power was the front to rear exhaust !
If you go down the path of extractors make sure they are tuned length or your wasting your hard earned $$$$$$.
